"...unlike him, lied about the fact when she was interviewed," Mr. Ferris wrote."

What happened to "I shall not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do"?

No...wait a minute...that's only at West Point.

What's wrong, of course, is the presence of such tempting distractions while attempting to turn some mediocre specimens from an unpromising generation into the leaders that will protect us in the coming years. But I guess it's more important that the girls get to play, too, and the nannies can feel good about themselves.

The midshipman's attorney, William Ferris, wrote a five-page letter to academy superintendent Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt on Feb. 22, asking Adm. Rempt to avoid treating his client unfairly, according to documents.

The letter mentions "multiple instances of intercourse" that took place sometime before Aug. 8, 2005 in a hotel room and in an automobile.

Both parties allegedly bragged about their exploits, witnesses told Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigators, but only the male was charged with using "obscene, profane, provoking, or improper language."

"From what I understand, the aforementioned unnamed female midshipman, also a (sophomore), engaged in virtually, if not precisely, the same misconduct as (the male), yet has received absolutely no punishment," wrote Mr. Ferris, a Naval Academy graduate.

..... "She also, by all accounts, engaged in underage drinking and possession of alcohol with (the male) and apparently, unlike him, lied about the fact when she was interviewed," Mr. Ferris wrote.

This woman should also be punished. She is just as guilty as he is.

Note they were both sophomores and she lied.

My work puts me in a lot of naval officers homes, when someone, even a fellow male officer is around, I get the usual answers about females in the Navy, when no is around I get the truth. Women in the Military have introduced a Soviet like atmospere of fear, which is especially unnerving since these are supposed military leaders.

Mid dismissed for sexual misconduct
By EARL KELLY, Staff Writer

A Naval Academy crew team member was dismissed from the school Friday for having what his attorney describes as consensual sex with a female midshipman, but the female was not punished for her part in the matter.

Mr. Ferris was not available for comment yesterday but, according to his letter, both the male and female violated the academy's conduct code by engaging in underage drinking.

"She also, by all accounts, engaged in underage drinking and possession of alcohol with (the male) and apparently, unlike him, lied about the fact when she was interviewed," Mr. Ferris wrote.

The academy has a policy of counseling victims of sexual crimes about their own role in the event, when appropriate, to avoid similar situations in the future.

Citing privacy concerns, Naval Academy spokesman Cmdr. Rod Gibbons declined to discuss the case or say whether the female was being counseled.

Commandant Navy Capt. Bruce Grooms conducted an administrative hearing in the case on Feb. 2. Three members of the male midshipman's chain of command testified, and two recommended retaining him, since his academy career was free of infractions, according to the documents. The crew coach, Rick Clothier, and the team's officer representative, Lt. Kristopher Stonaker also recommended retention.

Mr. Clothier could not be reached for comment and Lt. Stonaker declined to discuss the case.

Capt. Grooms recommended to Adm. Rempt that the male be discharged.

This case comes soon after the academy's starting quarterback, senior Lamar S. Owens Jr., 22, was charged Feb. 21 with rape, indecent assault and conduct unbecoming an officer for allegedly having sex with a female midshipman in January in the academy's dormitory, Bancroft Hall.

In an unrelated case, another football player is being investigated for alleged sexual assault of a female midshipman in Washington, D.C., sources said.

These cases come while a court martial is pending against Lt. Bryan Black, an academy oceanography instructor accused of making sexually explicit comments in the presence of a female midshipman.

A federal task force reported last August that efforts by the Naval Academy and the Military Academy at West Point to fight sexual harassment and assault have been "sporadic and incomplete."

This most recent case, concerning the member of the academy's crew team, surfaces just before tomorrow's quarterly meeting of the school's Board of Visitors, some of whom have called for eradicating sexual harassment at the academy.

We all know that women are merely mideless creatures led in every which direction by men, and are not responsible for what men tell them to do.

My son goes there and knows both persons. Both are seniors and it was consensual off campus. At first she accused him of rape, but the charges were unfounded since it was discovered she had interlude with more than one mid every weekend.

I have told him to beware. He said the backlash of this is that the male mids are withdrawing from the females even the innocent ones. Gender segregation in schools is a great thing.

I am sure she'll make an honorable member of our armed forces.

I understand that his lawyer said the case was to be dropped since it was consensual and off campus between two equally ranked mids.

Not sure you are talking about the same case. The article said both were sophomores.

"Do they have specific rules at the academy, that does not allow sex between students?"

There are rules which specifically delineate the sexual encounters between midshippersons. It is painfully evident that these two did not adhere to the requirements laid down by their wise and worshipful superior officers.

"Sex between midshippersons shall be accomplished in an orderly and military fashion. The male shall maintain a constant attitude of attention and the female shall heartily sing the milspec chorus of "Anchors Aweigh."

"The only authorized alcohol that shall be consumed during orderly and military sexual encounters is "Anchor Steam Beer."

That and the case referenced here indicates Rempt, Sup of the Academy, thinks minimal punishment for sexual misconduct is a ruined career.

Friday for having what his attorney describes as consensual sex with a female midshipman...

OK, that's what you'd expect the attorney to say. But of course, if you actually read the article, the mid is not being disciplined for that, but rather for the following:

but only the male was charged with using "obscene, profane, provoking, or improper language."

So ... what did he say, and to whom? Was this guy's "bragging" different in type and intent from that of the girl? This guy's apparent inability to shut up would be bad for a military organization. Perhaps it's best to weed this guy out now, rather than later when it really matters.

As for the girl -- well, her actions should should be considered, but separately. This guy sounds like he got himself into trouble.

As for the attempt to manufacture outrage over this -- and that's what this story is designed to do -- I never, ever trust the word of a defense attorney when he's defending his client in the newspaper. He's paid to tell only half of the story.

Sounds like the plot for a Lifetime channel movie.

Or, as I like to call it, the All-Men-Are-Scum-Channel.
