I'm showing my age, but I actually remember him from the old Steve Allen show (admittedly from reruns and archive stuff). He was part of the regular troop of brilliant comedians who made Allens' shows so great.
Louie Nye
Bill (José Jiménez) Dana
Pat Harrington Jr.
Tom Poston
And others. If you've never seen any of those shows search out the video or keep your eye out for any retrospective that includes the footage. Knotts and the others were hysterical.

I'm a bit rusty on my AGS trivia. At one time I could pretty much tell all the plot lines and recite large chunks of dialogue.
I have a book (unfortunately, not at hand) by Richard Kelly, who was a professor at U of Tenn. Lots of insight to the show. For one thing, Don and Andy collaborated a lot with the writers. They would have a line that just did not "feel right."
Don (from West Virginia and Andy from North Corolina, would say, "How would the folks back home say this?"
One of the factors in the show's incredible appeal, I think

When I saw the old "Three's Company" reruns, I always thought it was strange that he outlasted John Ritter. RIP, we loved you Barney.

Yeah, I always dreamt of living in a town like Mayberry. It would be great. There was an episode about that very thing. A stranger shows up in Mayberry. He seems to know everybody in town and everything that's going on. Folks get a little worried.
Ends up that he was in the Army with a guy from Mayberry, read the paper, and adopted it for his home town.

Don Knotts was a fraternity brother, Phi Sigma Kappa, and a honorably discharged veteran of WW II. In real life he was nowhere near what Barney Fife's life on screen was portrayed; just the opposite which makes his portrayal of Barney that much more remarkable.
God Bless You Don and may the Lord take you into his arms.
In the firm conviction my fraternity demands of me a life of faith and purpose..... Mr. Knotts fulfilled his fraternity pledge until the end.

As a life-long North Carolina resident, I have enjoyed every bit of Don Knotts' humor and talent. He will be sorely missed but luckily his legend will live forever. RIP, Don, and thanks for all the times you've added a smile to my life!
