MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Philippine president declares state of emergency amid flurry of coup rumors.
For the most part, Abu Sayyaf and MILF did not operate on Mindanao. Although they were involved in small scale bombings (Cotobatu), I found the area to be relatively peaceful.
Yeah one friend is from Mindanao and he said that the majority of the problems are in the southwest.
Sounds like some in the military and, surprise, surprise, leftists.
I hope the bad guys are not the Hucks. I had one of those folks as an instructor in jungle survival school. Smart, tough, and quiet. Invisible when they wanted to be. Not the sort of enemy I would choose.
The Philippines consist of around 7000 islands. How can anything like that be governed or controlled? What a mess this is in the making.
Well, no one is perfect especially in the eyes of the critics.
GMA is far better or should i say "the lesser evil" compared to the "crocodiles" behind Mr. Estrada's administration.
Our authorities just caught one of the leaders of the coup this week.
The muslims are a growing population in every province in the philippines and they have their share of terrorist, but you also have the New Peoples Army(communist) that basically control parts of several provinces, and are ruthless at times. There are political factions that are Marcos followers,Estrada followers, etc. There are military and political figures that have their own motives and reasons to see Gloria fail, and corruption runs deep in their culture,so who knows who might at any moment be planning to overthrow her government. My bet is on Estrada followers, aided by a few military co-conspirators. Don't get me wrong ,I love the filipinos and most of them love America, many have served, fought and died in the u.s. military .
Unfortunately it happened on the port issue as well. People need to slow down and at least understand an issue before bloviating.
Exactly... we got commies in our congress in the name of Satur Ocampo and more... no one is perfect for them, but i guess they think they are... lol!
This is a real shame to me. Whether you dislike the person (and we *all* loathe the likes of the Rats), there must always be respect for the office and the absolute, ironclad supremacy of the Constitution. It's really sad to see that some over there don't get it.
This is perpetrated by renegade military group headed by the Magdalo Group (those men who seized Oakwood hotel years ago). Their leaders escaped from prison last month.
The "big" muslim element in the Philippines is not that capable of creating distabilization in the Philippine government, once they attempt to, the fight will be not bet. Muslims and the Philippine government but it will be bet. Christians and Muslims... they knew that, thats why muslims dont intervene much with politics. We, Christians esp. in the south fights back against muslim intimidations unlike in France!
The last two Presidents came to power after what amounted to a coup, in other words damn the Constitution.....
Correction two out of the last three............
Good luck there and stay safe. Hopefully this will blow over.
"no one is perfect for them, but i guess they think they are"
That's always the way, isn't it? Especially the utopian leftists. "We could all be equal if only I lorded over everyone."
I agree with you. The problem with politics in the Philippines is that, it tends to look like a business to the politicians... corporation against a rival corporation. As a filipino, i hated it... im paying taxes but all they're doing is discussing about how to topple the present administration.
It was led by 14 junior officers in their military. They were arrested and released. They vowed that the next time it would come silently and swiftly.
You have people who have obligations to you, and people you are obliged to; and these obligations short-circuit any notion of laws, processes, or system at all times and in all cases.
Example: You want to get married in a high-falutin' Catholic Church... the church secretary gives you a list of "approved" florists, which they have a right to do. Unknownst to you, the florists have to pay $100 to the church for any jobs they get for the church, and they have to bury this price, undisclosed in the quote they give you.
Example: I needed my passport stamped because I was in the Phils. longer than 30 days. I could go myself and spend only $10, stand in line for several hours, etc. etc. or, pay a lawyer friend's paralegal $20 to take care of it, and get my passport back 2 days later with the stamp and no interview. The other $10 went to the customs inspector himself.
The sad facts of the Philippines are that the top 20 clans (including Arroyo's extended family) probably control 80% or more of the economy and 75% of the land. Only Filipinos can own land in the Philippines, so foreign investment is curtailed and channeled into the high-dollar, higher-tech industries that don't use much land. There are huge plantations, and they are still run very much like plantations, with servants, debutante balls, etc. while 70% of the population will never own even a slice of land.
Too bad they asked us to take our base away from there.
Now would be an advantageous time to have some help.
I think so too. That opposition attempt to impeach her looked ridiculous.
You're right. Even if the Pope is the president, commies will always find fault! They will go back to streets again.
