Little noticed in the kerfuffle over the takeover of major US ports by Dubai Ports is the key role being played by former Democratic Party leaders. Lobbying firms associated with ex-Democratic Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and Madeleine Albright (Clintons Secretary of State) have been working (paid subscription only link) to secure approval of the purchase by Dubai.
One would think that our leaders, even when out of office, would care more about their nation than their bank accounts. This hopefully will give impetus to a bill (drafted by Republican Congressman Mike Rogers of Michigan) working its slow way through Congress that would bar federal employees from representing foreign governments for four years after they leave public service.
A sad statement: we need a law that restricts former government leaders, who presumably would have Americas interest at heart, from going on the payroll of foreign regimes, even those with connections to terror activities.
Maybe they'll even take away my social security and medicare.
The hysterics and ignorance of this is unparalelled in memory.
Makes yellow cake and plame game seem tame.
Fire Snow! True insanity reins.....and most galling is our repub representatives.
I noticed all those camels in the lots where the dockworkers park.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Former President Clinton told Arab students Wednesday the United States made a big mistake when it invaded Iraq, stoking the partisan debate back home over the war.
It was a big mistake. The American government made several errors ... one of which is how easy it would be to get rid of Saddam and how hard it would be to unite the country.

Queen Rania, Bill Clinton to address Dubai charity gala
DUBAI (AFP) Her Majesty Queen Rania and former US President Bill Clinton will address a gala dinner in Dubai on Thursday hosted by a charity organisation that aims at harnessing technology to help underprivileged children, organisers said Wednesday.
Dubai, a Gulf trading hub, has launched a multibillion-dollar campaign to also become the Middle East's tourism, leisure and e-capital.
In 2003, the emirate is to host the annual board meetings of the IMF and World Bank.
Clinton will also be addressing a three-day Saudi economic forum focusing on the implications of the Sept. 11 attacks that opens in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Saturday, organisers said.
And I'm not so trusting. Do you trust countries that talk out of both sides of their mouth?

Clinton leads Dubai praise
by Anil Bhoyrul
FORMER US president Bill Clinton praised Dubais leaders last week, telling them the way Islamic and Western values and cultures are being merged is wonderful.
snip
Clinton said: Dubai is a role model of what could be achieved despite the other negative developments in the region. When I went to Dubai for the first time, I was taken to a technology facility where I hooked up to a bank kiosk and found that one can use a conventional banking service, while at the same time opt for an Islamic Sharia compliant service, which I thought was wonderful. This is a very good example of how cultures and values could be merged and offered to the rest. I was amazed and I have a lot of admiration for Sheikh Mohammed for what hes doing in Dubai.

Remarks by Former Clinton with the Press Pool - The Roosevelt Room
One thing I think is overlooked about the Middle East, that I think you should -- that we should be more attention to, is that there are successful, open societies welcoming diversity. If you look at Dubai, if you look at Abu Dhabi, if you look at Qatar, if you look at the welcoming of western educational institutions, modern economies, people of all different religious, racial and ethnic groups, and the enormous success they're having, I don't think you can minimize the impact that is having on the psychology of Arab leaders, too. They're having an enormous success. And we only write about the problems in the Middle East. I'd really like to see the people who are doing a good job over there get some credit for the impact they are having.
There was a conference in Dubai on the Arab world in 2020 a couple of months ago that I went to, and the leader of Dubai stood up and said to the 2,000 Arabs there, we have got to stop blaming other people for our problems; we have got to stop making excuses and we've got to modernize -- you can all be like Dubai, but we all have to change. That was unheard of 10 years ago, for somebody to do that. So I'm thrilled by what's going on.
Good point, I've thought of that myself. Richard Reid came from Britain. Also that one-eyed pirate fugly imam.
Yes! As I just mentioned on another thread, this piling of of Pubs like Frist is disgusting. Frankly, they come off as uninformed at best or highly calculating in a bid to undermine their own President.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch...............
Hooper is also on record claiming CAIR receives no "support from any overseas group or government." But land records revealed in the book "Infiltration: How Muslim Spies and Subversives Have Penetrated Washington" put the lie to that claim.
It turns out that an anti-Israeli foundation run by the crown prince of Dubai owns the very deed to CAIR's headquarters located almost in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol. The foundation has held telethons to support families of Palestinian suicide bombers.
I've been called a Bushbot before. Now that I disagree, I'm a Bush Basher. Go figure.
I'm not calling you either one. Nor do I consider myself one or the other. I have my differences with the Administration and I'm not at all comfortable with this issue. It's just that I hate to see knee-jerk reactions (I'm not saying by you) by a lot of people on FR.
We're better than that and I think we should show it. Instead of running off at the mouth (again, not you), let's put a little intellectual thought into this.
Frist is damned lucky that the dems are dummer than he is when it comes to framing every single issue.
I think there has been a lot of "over the top" "knee-jerk" reaction by people on both sides of this issue. It's a shame that someone can't just have an opinion without being labeled. I guess it's because if a person runs out of "ammo" in a debate, pidgeon-holing an opposite opinion is next. The problem is most Freepers don't fit in a nice, neat, tidy box.
I'm like you. I've supported Bush on everything but Mexico. This one is hard to explain OR accept.
I agree. I've only been around since December. I've seen a lot of great discussion and provocative ideas here. However, this topic has created immediate mass hysteria and I'd rather see more objective discussion. Isn't that what Free Republic is all about?
I've posted links to disturbing info and been told I'm hysterical etc. Apparently, if someone has an opposing opinion, they're over-reacting. I too thought that thinking for myself was the ideal. It looks like "group think" is to be prized more.
"It looks like "group think" is to be prized more."
Not by me. Have a great day.
Nope. But some of the comments on these threads are flame bait and it's too bad.
You have a great day too. :)
This one could cost us the election. Frist..do your dagone homework.
These are our allies in the WOT you are calling untrustworthy. They let us operate our base in their country for both gulf wars.
I am no fan of Frist and have called his office any number of times letting them know that his missing backbone is damned annoying.
