Bush Says He Will Veto Any Bill to Stop UAE Port Deal

WASHINGTON — In a rare display of his veto authority President Bush said Tuesday he will put the kibosh on any legislation that attempts to stop the purchase by a United Arab Emirates-owned firm of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which runs six major U.S. ports.

Breaking a gaping silence during the debate of the purchase by Dubai Ports World, Bush said the deal should go forward and won't jeopardize U.S. security.

Officials from the Cabinet departments that participate in the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States, which approved the sale last Monday, are appearing in a briefing Tuesday afternoon to defend the process by which CFIUS reviewed and approved the deal.

Officials from the Treasury, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security will participate.

This is a major outsource that doesn't feel "good for America"!

So who does the government hire? P&O is getting out of the business, and there are no US firms that operate docks.

I doubt a veto will do him any good on this one. A two thirds majority of both houses will probably not be a problem. No politician in his right mind is going to want to be on the wrong side of this one. I think Bush just needs to cut his loses and move on.

The UAE company does NOT handle the security. They Load and Unload ships. That is what they do. All security is handled by the USA.
Exactly. Someone film the ports now and see who is working there now. You will be suprised.

Would this be his first veto?

I think so. He's signed so many domestic socialist spending bills, that it is mind-boggling.

Kibosh? Isn't that an arabic word?

"To caboche" is an old British hunting term, taken from French. It's related to "kaput".

My thought exactly......this man who never even utters the word veto, who never saw a bill he evidently didn't like...all of a sudden is going to go to bat for an Arab outfit so they can have control of running our ports.... I have to tell ya, even if 9/11 had NEVER happened, I would still be against this, big time. There has to be some COMMON SENSE left SOMEWHERE out there in D.C. doesn't there???? I seriously wonder. Frankly, I think it left long ago....I was just appalled when Carter gave away the Panama Canal....when NAFTA was sneaked in under the wire before the public had a chance to discuss it, the things our gov. does is just deplorable.

Interesting. Wonder if it is also related to caboose?

On a related note, why does a single firm control entire ports?

The President is misreading the American people. If he persists, his GOP will take a bath in Nov. This deal stinks. There have been reports that Sec'y. Snow (Treasury) has some type of connection. Bush hasn't vetoed anything(signed off on every spending increase that has come across his desk) and now he wants to allow a UAE company a big piece of our ports. Reminds one of Miers and pop's "read my lips".

I wonder if anyone remembers Timothy McVeigh? Just wait until there are Americans in this country who were traveling on the day that an Al quieda cell managed to infiltrate the Security of one or two of our busiest sea ports with a nuclear device.

Those Americans will be left alive with only the memory of their families and all that left of their homes is the smoking hole the ground that used to be a major metropolitan city and a busy sea port.

If we only create 10, or 15, or 20 thousand Americans (instead of millions) who are alone with their memories of family and a burning, seething rage at a government that allowed this to happen out of greed and stupidity, what then?
