WASHINGTON In a rare display of his veto authority President Bush said Tuesday he will put the kibosh on any legislation that attempts to stop the purchase by a United Arab Emirates-owned firm of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which runs six major U.S. ports.
Breaking a gaping silence during the debate of the purchase by Dubai Ports World, Bush said the deal should go forward and won't jeopardize U.S. security.
Officials from the Cabinet departments that participate in the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States, which approved the sale last Monday, are appearing in a briefing Tuesday afternoon to defend the process by which CFIUS reviewed and approved the deal.
Officials from the Treasury, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security will participate.

I'm opposed to it not becasue of national security, I'm opposed it it because it is a government taking over a private company (I understand the company in the UAE is wholly owned by the UAE government). I don't like it when a government runs a private business -- especially a government headed by a monarch.
What a difficult choice.
I agree, I think Bush knows more than we obviously know about this Arab group than we do and knows they are legit. I trust him. He has been very stong about conquering terror and not allowing it in our country. I'm sorry, I think he knows what he is doing and if he thinks these guys are fine than so be it.
He is a politician and he has hopes. He goes wit the winds of polls not always facts
He is not a recognized expert on security matters. He is not ex CIA, FBI, or from what I know even military.
You forgot your sarcasm tags.
You tell 'em.
Yeah, it's probably easy enough for them to do that now so what's the big bitch about making it a cakewalk?
Francis signed up today...he is an agitprop troll..

Even the political, can sometimes be reasonable.
FRegards,

He hasn't vetoed a single bill, and this is the one he chooses to draw the line on? I'm a supporter, but...
"Yeah, it's probably easy enough for them to do that now so what's the big bitch about making it a cakewalk?"
Specify about how it makes the slightest difference?
Who owns the docks? The owner of the docks could require US workers.
How will al-Queda 'infiltrate' our ports? The ports will still be staffed by American Union members, any foreign workers will need to go through the same screening process as any other worker. Security will be handled by American companies with American workers. Most people have just not read the deal. UAE\Dubai has shown to be a an ally in the war on terror. They have provided logistical support in the WOT and have been a voice of sanity in the mideast. Some Freepers are painting too broad a brush here by condemning anyone from that area of the world as a bloodthirsty terrorist bent on our destruction. Anytime I hear that raving moron Michael Savage and that sleazeball Chucky Schumer aligning on an issue I know something smells.
"It will be run by the same people as it is now (US workers!)."
Union Longshoremen
And who determined security is not an issue??? You mean the Bush Bunch??? You don't get it, eh???
Uh huh.....welcome to FR.
Jimmy 'give the Panama Canal to the Red Chinese' Carter is all for it...
Hitlery Clinton is against it.....
Bush has lost his mind. He's unfit to be CnC.
