[Lawrence H.] Summers to Resign as Harvard President (Forces of Campus P.C. "Win" Again!)
LA Times ^ | 02/21/2006 | Michael Muskal

Embattled Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers announced today that he will step down at the end of this academic year, ending one of the shortest tenures in the university's history.

In a posting on the university website, Summers, the former secretary of the Treasury, said he will resign as of June 30.

"Working closely with all parts of the Harvard community, and especially with our remarkable students, has been one of the great joys of my professional life," he said in the open letter to the Harvard community.

"However, I have reluctantly concluded that the rifts between me and segments of the arts and sciences faculty make it infeasible for me to advance the agenda of renewal that I see as crucial to Harvard's future. I believe, therefore, that it is best for the university to have new leadership," he said.

Former Harvard President Derek Bok was named interim president.

All that money, all that prestige, and yet Harvard continues to hire little else except radical, leftist idiots. Not a top-tier university anymore, whatever the rankings say to the contrary.

Another purge by the Marxist thought police. He is lucky that the lefties in this country don't have enough power to build gulags and re-education camps, because Larry would have been dispatched to one or the other in a heartbeat.

I like to think that the small but widespread resurgences of conservative student organizations on college campuses within the past few years heralds the return of a commitment to actual education and to American values.

I would not let my children go there.

My daughter wants to apply just to turn them down if she got in. I may let her.

I have no sympathy for Summers whatsoever. He is as politically correct as they come. It was only an accident he offended the feminazis.

My daughter applied to a number of top tier schools this year and avoided the worst of the lefties, including Harvard and Stanford. Her list: Williams, Colgate, Washingon and Lee, William and Mary, Davidson, Northwestern, Rice, Scripps, Pomona, Santa Clara, and Whitman.

He done got et by his own monster.

The astounding thing is he was the quintessential member of the liberal academic establishment with an absolutely stellar backgrounds in the academic and governmental communities. Nevertheless, even he could not be allowed, in a academic setting where he was urged to speak, to say that differences in innate abilities might account for the relatively small number of women at the highest levels of the hard sciences, although many prestigious, peer reviewed studies so indicate. The successful public intellectual lynching of this man by a gaggle of screeching harpies harpies shows how totally corrupt and biased modern academia has become. The cannot and will not tolerate even moderately dissenting views from their own most highly credentialed people.

It's not only Harvard, most of the Ivy League, Stanford, Wellesley, Ann Arbor, Madison, and many others do not allow certain views to be spoken. They apparently see censorship as their only course. Many academics must be deeply insecure about their views.

I hate to tell you this but some of your daughter's choices are far far left wing schools. My son graduated from Pomona and I couldn't imagine anyplace being more left wing. Check out this source for some conservative choices. http://yaf.org/2004-2005_top10.asp

Thank you for the warning. I am aware that Pomona and Pitzer lean to the left up at Claremont. We were sort of counting on the presence of CMC and Scripps to provide a counterweight.

And these folks at Harvard call themselves Progessives?

Scripps is definitely a mistake, and Pomona should be investigated thoroughly. I have slight familiarity with these schools, and I hope you seek out some people who have more familiarity with them than I do. They will probably say the same thing. :)

Howie Carr speculated that Summers preferred to avoid the [liberal] embarrassment of a second no-confidence vote.

Summers cheated them out of the topping on their "victory".
