First-Grader Suspended For Sexual Harassment
Yahoo News ^ | feb 7,2006

A Brockton first-grader was suspended from school for three days last month after school officials said that he sexually harassed a girl in his class.

NewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported Tuesday that officials at the Downey Elementary School called the boy's mother, Berthena Dorinvil, on Jan. 30, and asked her to pick up her child from the school. Dorinvil said that officials told her that her son was being suspended for sexually harassing a 6-year-old female classmate.

"My son told me that the girl touched him first, so he touched her back," Dorinvil said. "I was shocked. I was crying. I was out of control," Dorinvil said.

School officials would not speak on camera, and police officers were posted at the school Tuesday afternoon. The school superintendent released a statement that said, "The safety and well-being of Brockton public school students and staff is of the utmost important to us, and we take all allegations of sexual harassment seriously."

Dorinvil has asked school officials to transfer her son to another school, but officials have not agreed to her request.

Exactly how does a six year old sexually harass someone, at six I didn't even know what sex was, let alone sexual harassment.

At seven I didn't know what sex was either. But I knew that something was wrong when a little boy in my class used every chance he got to stick his hand, hard and painfully, into my crotch. (This was back in the days when little girls wore dresses and white socks to school.) I couldn't concentrate in school because it seemed as though every time I turned my back or focused on my work he was there, crawling around on the floor under my desk and laughing maniacally. It was horrible. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone for awhile, but finally the teachers noticed. He didn't get suspended, just chewed out. That didn't do much good; he broke some of my school projects in revenge. I now realize he must have endured some kind of sexually-based torment at home to turn into such a psycho by age seven, but the fact remains that he made me miserable and that kids can sexually harass each other at a very young age.

It's worse than that.

I recently (reluctantly) attended the biennial mandatory sexual harassment seminar at my workplace.

The outside agitator - er instructor related an anecdote about a poor chap that went around with his hands at his sides, his eyes on the floor, never even addressing anybody unless he had to, and certainly never touching anybody (male or female).

You guessed it - the subject of a sexual harassment complaint.

It seems you have to "acknowledge" someone's presence and "notice" them. You just can't "acknowledge" or "notice" too much or in a way that "creates a hostile environment" in the mind of the complainant.

Two hours of male bashing, and I still don't know how to avoid a complaint.

If something like this does happen to the extent that you have described, then the parents should be held accountable. I was an ARMY brat, and if I got in trouble my dad got in trouble. If parents in society were held accountable for their kids actions, then they would be more likely to properly raise the kids.

Where I work, everyone has to attend a sexual harassment class when they are hired and have a "refresher course" every two years. It is a bloody waste of time.

Gads, I feel sorry for that guy. He thought that he was "playing it safe" and still gets screwed.

Luckily, we are not required to acknowledge people lest we risk a complaint. Many are so quick to find offense these days.

"Our society is insane!"

Not necessarily ... or at least not in this instance.

I have no problem with this whatsoever.

Some little punk who's parents let him watch too much cable TV taught my daughter about french kissing at the day care facility when they were both only in the 2nd grade.

Kids learn stuff early. Deal with it early.

Suspending the little brats shames the parents, too.

When I was a kid a certain amount of exploration was considered normal. What little kid didn't play doctor? On the other hand, kids are growing up in such dysfunctional homes these days that many of them are exposed to sexual behavior and material that is completely inappropriate for children. We have a current sexual abuse investigation on a 5 year old perpetrator....second time on the same kid. His parents exposed him to very sexually explicit stuff and he started acting out sexually a couple of years ago. This is actually fairly common with parents who are meth addicts. This particular child is in the permanent custody of his grandmother, but the behavior continues to be a problem.

"the girl touched him first, so he touched her back,"

So why wasn't the girl charged with sexual harassment?

Silly you.

It's a one-way street unless it's same-sex harassment.

Say good morning to a women and get charged with sexual harassment in the workplace.
Don't aay good morning to a women and get charged with sexual harassment in the workplace.
This is right out of Atlas Shrugged. I had to one time work in the presence of such a person.

It is getting to the point that, in may areas, it is a lose-lose situation.

You are so right. And Brockton is one tough place. I would NEVER send a child to a public school in Brockton.

Gee. I spent almost all of every recess in elementary school playing "Cootie Kissers". We girls kissed the boys on the cheeks, and they pretended to hate it. None of the parents went nutso.

I miss the "olden" days.....

I don't know who touched who first or where but this mother has ISSUES:

"My son told me that the girl touched him first, so he touched her back," Dorinvil said. "I was shocked. I was crying. I was out of control," Dorinvil said.

It's no wonder the kid is screwed up!

I just sent this article to a friend of mine with the comment, "Is it even possible for first-graders to sexually harass each other?"

This could be a perfectly normal mother who's been turned upside-down because she never dreamed that her six-year-old (SIX years old, fer cryin' out loud!) could be accused of such a thing. If it were my kid, methinks I'd be a bit "out of control" as well.

Children at that age cannot sexually harass! They have no sexual feelings yet! What idiots!
