LIVE THREAD: SJC hearing on the NSA surveilance program - C-span 1; 9:30 am EST

Posted on 02/06/2006 6:08:53 AM PST by ken5050

Good Monday morning, once again, fellow political jinkies. The NFL season may be over, but the political season inside the Beltway is 24/7/365. So join us, if you can, as those wacky Dems on the Senate Judiciary committee reprise their pitiful efforts to once again smear President Bush and score political points..

"Well, AG Gonzales thinks they should be able to testify; what is Bush hiding?"

Oh, man. They just CANT WAIT to introduce their evidence that someone (probably that ACLU boob) was surveiled within the US, and use it as evidence of administration perjury.

They are not even trying to hide it.

Gonzales slaps it away again, though.

What would happen if Gonzalez just sat there and didn't say a word when Schumer won't let him talk anyway.

I doubt he'd even notice.

True, is should meet with resistance. But it should be the form of an amendment to the law. Not to an inquisition of the President for USING the law as written.

Here is the law as written.

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This joint resolution may be cited as the ``Authorization for Use of Military Force''.

SEC. 2. AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES.

(a) In General.--That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.

(b) War Powers Resolution Requirements.--
(1) Specific statutory authorization.--Consistent with section 8(a)(1) of the War Powers Resolution, the Congress declares that this section is intended to constitute specific statutory authorization within the meaning of section 5(b) of the War Powers Resolution.

(2) Applicability of other requirements.--Nothing in this resolution supercedes any requirement of the War Powers Resolution.

"did these private lawyers have security clearances?"

Some insight into that is in the Newsweek article that offends your sensibilities.

Cornyn points out that the press (and the Democrats) continue to call it "domestic wiretapping."

"Schumer tries to get the AG to disclose further operations of the program. The AG deftly declines to compromise national security. Twice."

That is really sad and should be proof, in and of itself, that these hearings are really about the Dems and not about what is best for the American people. The Dems are going to get us all killed.
