Europe Awakes
Real Clear Politics ^ | February 6, 2006 | Victor David Hanson

Over the last four years Americans have played a sort of parlor game wondering when—or if—the Europeans might awake to the danger of Islamic fascism and choose a more muscular role in the war on terrorism.

But after the acrimony over the invasion of Iraq, Abu Ghraib, and Guantanamo, pessimists scoffed that the Atlantic alliance was essentially over. Only the postmortem was in dispute: did the bad chemistry between the Texan George Bush and the Green European leadership who came of age in the street theater of 1968 explain the falling out?

Or was the return of the old anti-Americanism natural after the end of the Cold War—once American forces were no longer needed for the security of Europe?

Or again, was Europe’s third way a realistic consideration of its own unassimilated and growing Muslim population, at a time of creeping pacifism, and radically scaled down defense budgets after the fall of the Berlin Wall?

Yet suddenly in 2006, the Europeans seem to have collectively resuscitated. The Madrid bombings, the murder of Theo van Gogh, the London subway attacks, and the French rioting in October and November seem to have prompted at least some Europeans at last to question their once hallowed sense of multiculturalism in which Muslim minorities were not asked to assimilate at home and Islamic terrorists abroad were seen as mere militants or extremists rather than enemies bent on destroying the West.

On January 19, Jacques Chirac warned that his military would use its nuclear forces to target states that sponsored terrorism against France—El Cid braggadocio that made George Bush’s past Wild West lingo like ‘smoke ‘em out’ and ‘dead or alive’ seem Pollyannaish by comparison.

Within the next couple of weeks, this whole thing is going to be forgotten.

Like the Paris riots last fall. Could very well be the case...but,

A Europe that once dismissed as retrograde America’s anti-ballistic missile system may well soon be in range of Iran’s envisioned nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles.

This development may lead to a change in attitude over there.

Not to restate the obvious, but Chiraq is probably the first national leader since El Cid to have no pulse and a pole up his arse as he enters a battle with Islamic forces.

But then again I might be beating a live man like a dead horse.

Hard to tell really.

Europe hasn't been awake since the late 19th century. When the Krauts kicked fwance's butt in 1871, most of the continent figured it was all over and went to sleep under the "protection" of their governments. Note the chronically poor morale of the fwench during WW1 and the initially half hearted response of the appeasers to the Nazis.

It sort of reminds me of GWB talking about how Islam is a ROP........... Crapola George! Clean out Dearborn for a start.

Exactly what I was thinking. Paris riots I mean. Amazing how fast they all just fizzled out and everyone went back to sleep.

Madrid... London...Theo Van Gogh... It splashes on the TV and in the newspapers, but like yesterday's Chinese dinner, it just seems to vanish.

they just can't do anything else because they have too much invested in their multiculturism and if that goes, the entire liberal house of cards is going to go down with it. All over Europe.

The precipice is a fine place to separate the slag from the metal. NOW, would a few US newspapers find the nuts to publish the 'toons? If not, I don't want to hear any more stuff from people like Tim Robbins whining about being censored.

We will have gone from a promise of peace, to the precipice once again.

El Cid was Spanish. Is there not a French archetype that fills the role?

How about Inspector Clouseau?

The gist of this article, and especially the title, remind me of a much-loved Irish song, "The West's Asleep." The words of the song could almost be referring directly to the awakening of Europe to the annihilation of a once great culture that has been ignoring the gathering threat from the East.

With apologies to Thomas Osborne Davis, I've tweaked his song below... I heard The Chieftains play it live once, and would have followed them into battle anywhere immediately.

When all Stateside a vigil keep,
The West's asleep, the West's asleep -
Alas! and well may mankind weep
When Europe lies in slumber deep.

Yet long a brave and haughty race
Honoured and sentinelled the place.
Sing, Oh! not e’en their sons' disgrace
Can quite destroy their glory's trace.

[insert cartoon furor here...]

But, hark! a voice like thunder spake,
The West's awake! the West's awake!
Sing, Oh! hurrah! let Islam quake,
We'll watch till death for freedom’s sake.

I must admit that after watching the Europeans spout their petty little insults to the USA year after year part of me says "who cares?". The euroscum has pampered the islamanzis for years...remember Munich? While they have been busy trying to prop up their failing societies by bashing the USA (hasn'/won't work)the mussies have poured in and set up shop.

Having said all that, it is up to Europe to rid itself of the islam cult. Whether they continue to hide indoors and live in fear is up to them. So far the raping and murder of nonmuslims hasnt slowed and the fanatics are energized by the euro elite's lack of backbone.

One has to wonder what Europe will look like in 20 years.
I would hope that Europe can produce a leader someday that will take a stand, face the problem and not blame everything on the USA. No one deserves to live under islamic slavery.

If Europe is anything at this juncture it's like a 30-year, three-pack-a-day smoker who develops emphysema and decides that now is the time to quit.

For them to do something about the problem will require a complete rejection of the PC world-view and layers upon layers of post-Colonial guilt they have built up over the last 50 years. In all fairness, that is a big psychological hurdle for anyone--it would be akin to Americans collectively deciding to reject Capitalism in favor of Communism. I think things will have to get pretty bad before they are up to the task--if then. I have never seen any evidence that Liberals are capable of waking up and smelling the coffee in large numbers.
