Former Steeler Swann's political bliss may soon pass
Saturday, February 4, 2006
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - If 2006 ends for Lynn Swann as well as it started, he's sure to be Pennsylvania's next chief executive and Gov. Rendell will go down in political history as One-term Ed.
In January, Swann swiftly amassed more than enough unofficial support in regional caucuses of the Republican State Committee to clinch the committee's endorsement for the GOP gubernatorial nomination next Saturday.
The former Pittsburgh Steeler reached that mark just as his old team was heading for another Super Bowl game and Steeler-mania was sweeping the state. Even Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones star of the Super Bowl's halftime show complimented Swann before a horde of reporters in Detroit as he admiringly recalled the wide receiver's graceful athletic style.
But Swann's bliss could be short-lived.

Wishful thinking. The libs are running scared because they know that Swann could very well win.
the unnamed AP writer would seem to be in Rendell's camp, cheering on Scranton to give the GOP problems.
Media just can't resist editorializing!
yeah pretty biased story-make sure you check out my column tomorrow morning on the Swann race-I will post it around 10:00am

"Swann has really not been tested at the podium, so to speak," said Canton lawyer Matthew Brann, chairman of the state committee's northeast caucus, which represents Scranton's home turf and supported him for the endorsement by a lopsided margin.
No problem, Swann will grow and become stronger in the primary with Scranton. Scranton will be the ex NFL player's "practice team." Swann will be the better for it when he goes against the Democrat's gov. candidate.
Terry Madonna, the Dem used as a political analyst by WGAL-TV locally and who sometimes is on other TV programs, has tried the same spin lately. I see Swann as having the upper hand because the Ridge people (perhaps with Rove and the President behind the scenes, my speculation) got to the pro-life, conservative minority on State Committee first with Swann telling them he's pro-life. That's all it took.
The old establishment types who love Scranton are left holding the bag. State Committee meets next Saturday with a Swann endorsement likely. Scranton's people are still trying, but they are in serious trouble. Swann is the outsider here and can probably beat Ed "I signed the big legislative pay raise" Rendell.
Whatever. The left is going to lose another one..
Wow. what a factoid. Unopposed people endorsed by the party are the nominee. Who'd a thunk it?
The only two point worth considering is that Rendell has raised 12 million to Swann's 1.5 million. However, Swann started raising funds recently, while Rendell has probably been raising funds since the last election. Add to that the fact that Rendell has a bad name now, and Swann is popular, and it becomes a lot more interesting.
I sent Mr. Swann's campaign a donation, and urge all Freepers to do the same. We can turn PA into a red state if we can defeat Rendell and his corupt Philly-based political machine.

Ed Rendell is vulnerable to an African-American conservative. I know it, he knows it, and so should the vast majority of Pennsylvanians.
Who carried Ed to Harrisburg? African-Americans in Philly and Pittsburgh. Lynn Swann can split that vote with appeals to a socially conservative agenda that reflects the values of many African-Americans here.
Ahhh...the gears of the DNCmedia are cranking up. What an interesting year we're going to have her in PA! Let the games begin!
