NZ Shark Taggers Issue Fresh Warning - "Taranaki Terror" 19ft Great White Shark
New Zealand News ^ | 02 February 2006 | By MICHELLE SUTTON

Scientists issued a fresh warning about a great white shark seen cruising Taranaki's coast line last night after attempts to tag it with a satellite tracker failed.

Marine scientist Clinton Duffy and former New Plymouth marine biologist Demian Chapman attempted to tag the terror of the deep with pop-off satellite tags to monitor its movements.

However, during the mission Mr Duffy did see a great white at least 4m long dive out of the water near Seal Rock, off Port Taranaki.

It is the latest of several sightings in the past month, of the shark dubbed the Taranaki Terror.

"We stopped for the sunset and as we were watching I saw a huge white shark almost breach, it almost jumped completely clear of the water off Seal Rock," Mr Duffy said.

Just ask yourself,"Is this world
any worse off without the Sabre-tooth tigers?"If I were in charge, that fish would be on a slab in a Japanese fish market.

Actually, you did just compare a shark to a baby.
Also, if he said just take away te laws protecting the sharks away, it doesn't mean he wants them eliminated, he said he didn't. Then you say that yes he does. It sounds like an argument my 10 year-old and his friend were having "No", "Yes", "No", "Yes".
BTW, I saw this post on another thread, but it can be adapted in this situation "Shoot, Shovel, Shhhh".

shark meat is not very good.

That depends on preparation. If you allow the meat to become tainted by the liver then, while the ammonia can be removed the taste is ruined. I have caught and eaten shark. It is not bad. It certainly does not come up to the standard of Pompano or Red Snapper but it's OK. However it is not worth the effort.

If you have eaten a lot of scallops in restaurants, chances are you have eaten skate or sting ray which is the same as shark but without the ammonia complications. I know about that. Once upon a long time ago I made "scallops" to sell to seafood places. 30 years ago frozen scallops from the grocery store included a lot of skate and ray. My brother in law used to think he was a connoiseur of scallops. When I visited him he took me out to eat scallops in a new restaurant. He was incensed when he thought he got bad scallops. Actually it was good real ones. He was really a connoiseur of skate and didn't know it.

You realize that things like polar bears and cougars do consider humans as good food.

We don't run fast, and are easier to eat.

One last thing. Bear have some of the most interesting metabolic mechanisms of any land animal.

Fascinating. Could you please expand on that? Thanks.

Maybe in a last gasp effort to keep us humble. Placement on a menu doesn't enhance one's ego and flies and worms don't make the same point in quite the same way.

I'm a Warner Brothers man all the way.

Yet one more reason to take your side in this debate.

Although debating ecological concepts with someone with such an 'atomistic' view of species as your tormentor does not offer a very amusing prospect.

Don't recite some bunny-hugger mumbo jumbo, about predators serve a great purpose.

Sorry dude -the world is far more interesting with dangerous predators in it.

Turning the earth into a giant shopping mall, by eliminating all of the scary stuff, is hardly a worthwhile goal. Nothing to do with their contributions to the ecosystem - sanitized wilderness is boring.

By all means, give a dangerous game hunt a try - maybe you'll learn to respect these remarkable animals. If not, you'll be at least one step closer to "making the world a safer place" for bunnies and poodles.

Could you please expand on that?

Don't know a whole lot about bear metabolism, but I do know that hibernating bears don't urinate or defecate during hibernation. For 4 to 6 months.

That qualifies as pretty remarkable to me.

It is extremely unlikely that we could wipe out any predator without astronomical costs. And species are more enduring than the eco-socialists who are pushing ESA would admit.

Remember the coelocanth? It was supposed to have gone extince millions of years ago. It didn't.

Try search at www.worldnetdaily.com for Jan Jacobson. There is an article there by Jay Walley which discusses the extinction thingie.
