In the court (and courts) of life and death, a little 11-year-old Massachusetts girl named Haleigh Poutre could be the next Terri Schiavo. For those who have not heard the tragic story, Haleigh was beaten nearly to death last September, allegedly by her adoptive mother and stepfather. The beating left her unconscious and barely clinging to life.
Within a week or so of the beating, her doctors had written her off. They apparently told Haleigh's court-appointed guardian, Harry Spence, that she was "virtually brain dead." Even though he had never visited her, Spence quickly went to court seeking permission to remove her respirator and feeding tube. The court agreed, a decision affirmed recently by the supreme court of Massachusetts.
And so, no doubt with the best of intentions, a little girl who had already suffered so much was stripped by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts of even the chance to fight to stay alive. If she didn't stop breathing when the respirator was removed, which doctors expected, she would slowly dehydrate to death.
Close Call
Then came the unexpected:

He also said that it was the most severe case of dehydration that he has ever seen. That makes me think he was not up to the task to determine anything. Since he did not want any independent observers there, there is a problem with his credibility..
I've never heard of a medical examiner refusing a request from another medical professional to observe an autopsy. Many in the profession commented on that, and none of those commenting had ever heard of it either. I wonder how much he was paid to sign his name to that autopsy report.
Have you thrown ever rocks for a living? You have to be in shape. You have to have a pretty good arm and there's always some young fastrock pitcher right behind you, trying to get your job. You do your best and then you get hit with rubber bullets and tear gas. Oh, it's no picnic. You should get $8, $10 an hour at least.
I see your point. That is a tough job, but the benefits are great. If you advance far enough, you get 72 virgins. Which makes me wonder what they're paying the muslim who cleans the toilets at the diner in a town near here. It might explain why there is a shortage of virgins in that town.
Convenient, isn't it?
Senator Martinez = RINO = COWARD
Conservative Republicans are getting REALLY sick and tired of cowards.
Dunno, he seemed competent enough to me. But there isn't a whole lot you can learn fifteen years later. Terri's bodily remains were of little interest save to confirm things that had long been known, e.g., she had never had a heart attack, was reasonably healthy, was not dying, would probably have lived many more years. Her organs below the neck were unaffected so she had not suffered a global anoxic insult in 1990 -- not news but an interesting datum indeed if Columbo is listening in. IOW, it wasn't cardiac arrest that damaged her brain, it was brain damage that put her in cardiac arrest. We're back to the choke hold on her carotid arteries.
When they carve up Michael some day, they'll find nothing but thick, foul-smelling fluid where his heart, his soul and his truth center were supposed to be.
You have to make a lot of advances to get 72 virgins.
I never quite saw the point. Once you do what men do to virgins, they're not virgins. Then they think they own you and you should bring them expensive presents and get a better job and compliment them all the time and be sensitive to their feelings and take out the garbage. Try THAT with 72 former debutants all at once.
"And don't even THINK of buying me the wrong chocolate!"
Yes, very convenient, for those who murdered Terri.
Uh, oh. I didn't know there WAS any "wrong" chocolate.
There sure is. If I'm in the mood for Godiva raspberry truffles, don't bring me Reese's Cups. If I'm in the mood for Reese's Cups, don't bring me Godiva raspberry truffles. There are millions of chocolates out there, and you better know which one I'm in the mood for, without me having to tell you.
(Sweating profusely) Are you... one of the 72... virgins?
Nope. They're pickier and more demanding than I am.
I believe Judge Greer denied the request for Cyril Wecht to observe the autopsy. Remember that Greer was the control mechanism the entire way.
Our Judge who now is an expert in condemning innocents to death actually has a friend, who is now moving across the country. Reminder of how a poor land use lawyer can grow up to write his own laws and constitution, a real Horatio Alger of the bioethicking industry....

It doesn't take any brains to be a bioethicist. Just a mean streak and an earnest desire to kill everyone else and maybe yourself. (Why does that sound like contemporary Islam?) On all life-and-death questions, choose death. If the choice is cleaning the garage vs. going out for dinner, choose death. If the choice is chocolate raspberry truffles vs. Reese's cups, choose death. If you can verbalize this elegant ideal, you will soon be the rage in academic circles and cafe society.

I started to read it, but instead decided to have breakfast. No surprise our ardent detractors and lovers of death are beloved by the openly avowed communists.
