Cindy Sheehan, the drama queen who was removed from the House gallery last night before the State of the Union address for wearing a t-shirt with a political message, is not the first person to be tossed from a Congressional gallery at a high-profile event for wearing a political t-shirt.
In the early days of the Senate's impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in January 1999, a Pennsylvania man named Dave Delp was removed by the Capitol police from the Senate gallery for wearing a t-shirt that said, "Clinton doesn't inhale, he sucks."
Unlike Sheehan, Delp didn't make a federal case of the incident and took his removal with good spirit. He told me at the time that he hadn't gone into Senate chamber to protest, but that he had opened his jacket some while sitting in the gallery.
An alert Capitol police officer hustled him out of the gallery and took him to the sub-station in the basement of the Capitol for processing. The only real trouble Delp got into was when he mistakenly thought the doughnuts left out on a table in the sub-station were for guests.
Delp was released after an hour or so without being charged. The New York Daily News did a brief story about the incident which was picked up for a gag by Saturday Night Live.
I haven't seen Delp in a few years, but we always have a good laugh about the incident when we run into each other in D.C.

FNC reporting that Cindy Sheehan was told if she put her jacket back on, she could stay at the SOTU speech. She refused.
She also claims she was handcuffed behind her back. A lie.

Somewhere, in some place I can't get to now, I have pictures of Delp from that day. The D.C. Chapter was outside the Capitol that day doing our thing. RaceBannon was there, regaling us with his James Carville impersonations.

Thanks for the info, kristinnn. Cindy, the professional martyr, is once again trying to inflate her pitiful little image by saying that the Capitol police singled her out for such "vicious" treatment as making her walk downstairs and booking her. I'll bet it's been done many times before, but the press won't be regaling us with minute by minute accounts of the always-suffering Sheehan.

I have the sense that most of the Dems were happy to have Cindy gone! There are about 40 very hardcore Democratic congressmen, the ones who do the basement impeachment routine and only a handful of them could want her there, making a scene. How about "the Cindy Sheehan Democrats" as a campaign theme.
I try to remember Casey but Sheehan is a disgusting human being. Notice how she is no longer a grieving mom but now an activist. Her eyes dart around for the camera like an addict searching for a fix. She clearly used her son's death to raise her own profile.
Prayers for Casey-a wonderful human being.

I don't think Delp was given the option of closing his jacket. They just took him out pronto.

She said she was overheated from walking up three sets of steps. Out of shape, eh?

I took the headline to mean that you were calling Cindy a man. She is very unattractive, in all honesty, and could be mistaken for a man. There's something wrong with me.

The Democrats always overplay their hand. It's getting harder for even their allies in the press to take them seriously.
