FLASHBACK: Man Wearing Anti-Clinton T-Shirt Removed from Senate Gallery at Impeachment Trial
Wednesday, February 1, 2006 | Kristinn

Cindy Sheehan, the drama queen who was removed from the House gallery last night before the State of the Union address for wearing a t-shirt with a political message, is not the first person to be tossed from a Congressional gallery at a high-profile event for wearing a political t-shirt.

In the early days of the Senate's impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in January 1999, a Pennsylvania man named Dave Delp was removed by the Capitol police from the Senate gallery for wearing a t-shirt that said, "Clinton doesn't inhale, he sucks."

Unlike Sheehan, Delp didn't make a federal case of the incident and took his removal with good spirit. He told me at the time that he hadn't gone into Senate chamber to protest, but that he had opened his jacket some while sitting in the gallery.

An alert Capitol police officer hustled him out of the gallery and took him to the sub-station in the basement of the Capitol for processing. The only real trouble Delp got into was when he mistakenly thought the doughnuts left out on a table in the sub-station were for guests.

Delp was released after an hour or so without being charged. The New York Daily News did a brief story about the incident which was picked up for a gag by Saturday Night Live.

I haven't seen Delp in a few years, but we always have a good laugh about the incident when we run into each other in D.C.

I'm sending it to CNN right now. On another thread, freepers mentioned that they were in full outrage that Cindy had been arrested.

If they did a LICK of research, they'd know better.

GeeZ, somebody decontaminate me now.

Going to Daily Communinistic Chaos reminds me of walking into an old beauty parlor. Lot's of dickering, mostly about nothing, by those with their knowledge supplied from newsfeeds on their favorite radio station, and the weekly visits to the beauty parlor.

They couldn't get a concensus on what action to take, and probably think a concensus is where they put down the number of people that live in their household.

already did when it happened. Matthews kept yelling, "Do you know who I am?!" He called after he did it to ask me who Matthews was. I laughed and laughed. So funny

Sorry, I have no idea what his means.

Here is some of Sheehan's "message" from the DailyKos:

Wow, I get hauled out of the People's House because I was, "Protesting."

I was never told that I couldn't wear that shirt into the Congress. I was never asked to take it off or zip my jacket back up. If I had been asked to do any of those things...I would have, and written about the suppression of my freedom of speech later. I was immediately, and roughly (I have the bruises and muscle spasms to prove it) hauled off and arrested for "unlawful conduct."

After I had my personal items inventoried and my fingers printed, a nice Sgt. came in and looked at my shirt and said, "2245, huh? I just got back from there."

I told him that my son died there. That's when the enormity of my loss hit me. I have lost my son. I have lost my First Amendment rights. I have lost the country that I love. Where did America go? I started crying in pain.

What did Casey die for? What did the 2244 other brave young Americans die for? What are tens of thousands of them over there in harm's way for still? For this? I can't even wear a shrit that has the number of troops on it that George Bush and his arrogant and ignorant policies are responsible for killing.

I wore the shirt to make a statement. The press knew I was going to be there and I thought every once in awhile they would show me and I would have the shirt on. I did not wear it to be disruptive, or I would have unzipped my jacket during George's speech. If I had any idea what happens to people who wear shirts that make the neocons uncomfortable that I would be arrested...maybe I would have, but I didn't.

There have already been many wild stories out there.

I have some lawyers looking into filing a First Amendment lawsuit against the government for what happened tonight. I will file it. It is time to take our freedoms and our country back.

I don't want to live in a country that prohibits any person, whether he/she has paid the ulitmate price for that country, from wearing, saying, writing, or telephoning any negative statements about the government. That's why I am going to take my freedoms and liberties back. That's why I am not going to let Bushco take anything else away from me...or you.

I am so appreciative of the couple of hundred of protesters who came to the jail while I was locked up to show their support....we have so much potential for good...there is so much good in so many people.

Four hours and 2 jails after I was arrested, I was let out. Again, I am so upset and sore it is hard to think straight.

Keep up the struggle...I promise you I will too.

This is just one of the reasons why our founders did not want a popular democracy, but a representative democratic republic. Once we start allowing a single person to disrupt an event meant to address the interests of all 300,000,000 of us, we soon descend into chaos.

The First Amendment speaks of religious freedom. Instead, it has become a religion.

Somehow, this attention whore needs to start being ignored as much as possible. Her 15 minutes have been up for months.

Here is a link to what appears to be the original article in the NY Daily News (link only...I was too cheap to pay the $3.95 for the actual article...CNN may be too cheap as well):

DUmmieland claims no such thing ever happened, because they can't find it on the web. This may be a first as they mostly base their conclusions on feelings, not facts.

Hello? The picture of her with her being taken out with her hands in front of her, not handcuffed behind her back, are available on FR both last night and today. So she's been caught in that lie.

Perhaps you haven't stayed current on Cindy Sheehan's many, many lies she's been caught in over the last year.

As to the banner, it has been widely reported by CNN, MSNBC and FNC that she hung a banner over the railing. Are you saying that those news accounts are simply incorrect and the people who provided the information to the news agencies are lying?

Well, well. Look at this. A wife of a representative was ejected from the Gallery for wearing a tee shirt that said "Support our Troops".

I'm not sure why you don't seem to understand that protesting is not allowed in the gallery in any form.

You're welcome, Liberty. It's so clear the rules apply to all forms of protest that the leftists will have a difficult time making the case that the rules were inappropriately applied.
