'Brokeback Mountain' Gets 8 Oscar Nominations'

The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" led the Academy Awards field Tuesday with eight nominations, among them best picture and honors for actor Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee.

Also nominated for best picture were the Truman Capote story "Capote"; the ensemble drama "Crash"; the Edward R. Murrow chronicle "Good Night, and Good Luck"; and the assassination thriller "Munich."

The Johnny Cash biography, "Walk the Line," considered a likely best picture nominee, was shut out, though Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon earned acting nominations for the film.

George Clooney picked up two nominations, as supporting actor for his role as a steadfast CIA undercover agent in "Syriana" and best director for his Edward R. Murrow tale "Good Night, and Good Luck."

Along with best-actor contender Ledger, and directing nominee Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" scored nominations for Michelle Williams as supporting actress, Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for their screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's short story.

To: who knows what evil?

Midnight Cowboy won in 1969. I wouldn't call either film 'porn' though.

The Hulk being CGI was what killed it for me

I didn't mind the CGI, but the way overlong psychological buildup was something most fans of this genre didn't want.

Face it, it was boring.

CGI is awful. It dates a movie instantly. Whereas something like 'Jason and the Argnonauts' looks timeless.

Jason and the Argonauts is a classic. I loved it as a kid. Where the heck are those kinds of movies. Why is Hollywood bothering with horny, gay sheepherders?

Out of all the movies listed for nomination, there was only one that truly deserves an award, and that is "March of the Penguins" for Best Documentary.

Who actually *has* seen this movie? The Michael Moore crowd? The metrosexuals?

Here's one (unscientific) poll: www.cnn.com

How many of the Academy Award nominees for best picture have you seen?

All 1% 411 votes

Some 25% 7462 votes

None 73% 21543 votes

Maybe.  I thought the script was worse though.  I have the DVD and will Fast Forward to the "Hulk" parts, but the rest is unwatchable.

At an average of $7 bucks a ticket, that appx. 7 million admissions(about 2% of the US population) and I wouldn't doubt that a lot of those admissions were second and third time goers, just like fartinghigh 9/11.

I completely agree, although I believe the average ticket price was somewhat higher...we are talking 'art houses', in many instances. When you also consider the number of repeat viewings (designed to inflate numbers, and PROVE to America that our culture now embraces that of the sodomites); I suspect the number of actual individual viewers is closer to 5.5 million...as you stated, not a large percentage of the population, by any means.

This one was obviously a Troll.  He signed up 10 days ago, threw a few perfuctionary posts about Iran and then went off the deep end (post #248) when we disagreed with his viewpoint about this movie.

Pretty filthy language ... wonder if he kisses his boyfriend with that mouth.
