The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" led the Academy Awards field Tuesday with eight nominations, among them best picture and honors for actor Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee.
Also nominated for best picture were the Truman Capote story "Capote"; the ensemble drama "Crash"; the Edward R. Murrow chronicle "Good Night, and Good Luck"; and the assassination thriller "Munich."
The Johnny Cash biography, "Walk the Line," considered a likely best picture nominee, was shut out, though Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon earned acting nominations for the film.
George Clooney picked up two nominations, as supporting actor for his role as a steadfast CIA undercover agent in "Syriana" and best director for his Edward R. Murrow tale "Good Night, and Good Luck."
Along with best-actor contender Ledger, and directing nominee Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" scored nominations for Michelle Williams as supporting actress, Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for their screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's short story.
Midnight Cowboy won in 1969. I wouldn't call either film 'porn' though.
DELIVERANCE???
(Broke)back again? Now can you address out earlier points?
Man, I just hope I live that long!! My goal is to see them graduate Highschool. Only 14 more years!
I didn't mind the CGI, but the way overlong psychological buildup was something most fans of this genre didn't want.
Face it, it was boring.
PERFECT!
Very Funny!!!
Jason and the Argonauts is a classic. I loved it as a kid. Where the heck are those kinds of movies. Why is Hollywood bothering with horny, gay sheepherders?
Out of all the movies listed for nomination, there was only one that truly deserves an award, and that is "March of the Penguins" for Best Documentary.
Here's one (unscientific) poll: www.cnn.com
How many of the Academy Award nominees for best picture have you seen?
All 1% 411 votes
Some 25% 7462 votes
None 73% 21543 votes
Maybe. I thought the script was worse though. I have the DVD and will Fast Forward to the "Hulk" parts, but the rest is unwatchable.
It will win it's awards but hollyweird will pay for it."
Hollywood is sexist and hateful against heterosexuality.
BOYCOTT HOLLYWOOD!!!
My apology for the misunderstanding.
You guys have convinced me to get this movie next time I am at the video store ... thanks!
I saw the previews and that was enough for me.
I completely agree, although I believe the average ticket price was somewhat higher...we are talking 'art houses', in many instances. When you also consider the number of repeat viewings (designed to inflate numbers, and PROVE to America that our culture now embraces that of the sodomites); I suspect the number of actual individual viewers is closer to 5.5 million...as you stated, not a large percentage of the population, by any means.
..anything with Ray Harryhausen special effects was great...
He's still alive too!
Pretty filthy language ... wonder if he kisses his boyfriend with that mouth.
