Good morning, all.

Join us today for the final victory lap, the vote to "confirm Samuel Alito, of New Jersey, to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court."

It's all over except the final vote tally.

Lots of surprises yesterday at the HUGE vote to impose cloture, so perhaps there are still some surprise votes to come?

When the Hawaii senator was ill and couldn't make the vote on a judge, Senator Stevens voted yes, but then changed to "abstain", to balance out the vote. This is what a collegial body does.

On a cloture vote, the "nays" are meaningless, all that matters is how many "aye" votes there are. For a brief moment, when Senator Reid stood up to announce Ensign was injured and couldn't make the vote, I thought Reid was going to announce that, in honor of the senate collegiality and common decency, he would vote "yes" on clotuer for his fellow Nevadan since Ensign's "abstain" vote would be like a "no" vote.

But then, he didn't, because democrats, and Reid in particular, have no honor, no propriety, and no sense of decency or collegiality.

Reid said they want an independent judiciary. They want a liberal judiciary that rules on ideological grounds not the law. That is what it all comes down to. All this other crap about Alito's views and rulings are just the smokescreen. Alito's only crime is that he wouldn't say that he would never overturn Roe v. Wade.

What am I missing here. Didn't the cloture vote yesterday END debate on the nomination? Why are the democRATs allowed to continue to spewing their bile after cloture?
