And, from seattletimes.nwsource.com:
...Both journalists suffered head injuries, and Woodruff also has broken bones.

They were in stable condition following surgery at a U.S. military hospital in Iraq, and due to be evacuated to medical facilities in Germany, probably overnight, said ABC News President David Westin...

Those damn Ruskies.

That's why I spent so much time in the Hofbrauhaus. Fritz and Gertude never gave up.

They have been flown to German, according to the alert on Fox.

When the IED goes boom, you go flying around inside your vehicle like a rag doll. If not properly strapped to the chin, the helmet can easily be dislodged. Or, something inside the vehicle (e.g., tire jack) could easily have become unsecured and whacked him in the noggin. Many scenarios.

From the UPI:
ABC's Woodruff, Vogt Stable After Bombing
by UPI Wire
Jan 29, 2006

BAGHDAD, Jan. 29, 2006 (UPI) -- ABC News co-anchor Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt were in stable condition after undergoing surgery in Iraq Sunday.

The men were severely injured in a bombing attack near Taji, Iraq, but were treated quickly at the U.S. military hospital in Balad, about a 20-minute ride from Baghdad, ABC said.

Both suffered head injuries. Woodruff had shrapnel wounds and Vogt was hit by shrapnel in the head and suffered a broken shoulder, the network said.

Both were wearing body armor, helmets and ballistic glasses at the time of the bombing.

Woodruff, Vogt and a four-man broadcast team were traveling in a convoy with Iraqi security forces, ABC reported. They had been embedded with the 4th Infantry Division but were in an Iraqi vehicle when an improvised explosive device was detonated. The explosion was followed by small arms fire.

ABC said the news team initially had been traveling in a U.S. armored vehicle, but had transferred into the Iraqi vehicle.

The U.S. military said it would conduct an investigation of the attack.

Woodruff was on assignment in Iraq and planned to broadcast from there this week for the State of the Union address.

Woodruff was named co-anchor of ABC News' "World News Tonight" earlier this month.

He also contributes reports to "Nightline" and other ABC News broadcasts. Most recently he covered the presidential campaign of Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C.

That's exactly what I meant, sorry it didn't read to your liking but I don't appreciate even being labeled in the same class as a "troll". I was another before I Wasanother.

Thanks. Somehow, I'm reminded of the day David Blum died. I know they're completely different circumstances, but still. . .

Now they are saying will be moved..........not sure which is right.

Don't forget how sad we were the day Michael Kelly died.

Let's face it, they are all ours, one way or another.

Darn right. What's that saying, "I may disagree with what you are saying, but I'll fight for your right to say it?"

Balad is 20 minutes from Taji by helicopter, not overland. From Baghdad its about 30 minutes.

Basically if you're transported to the Balad hospital, you're a good candidate to be flown to Germany that very evening, directly from the Balad Air Base. That's about a 5 or 6 hour trip.

They will most certainly be in the air and headed toward Germany at this hour (12:15 AM Iraq time as I write this). And if not yet, then momentarily.

It had just been updated no too long before you posted. Some people are definitely over the top with their comments. I honestly know very little about Woodruff's politics. I assume he is liberal, but that shouldn't be reason for wishing him dead or injured. He never killed anyone as far as I know.

The MSM and their reporters will get respect when they give respect especially to our troops.

From an earlier post of mine just to clarify my position on any left wing liberal reporter going to Iraq in order to manufacture the news instead of reporting it.

Anyone with the gumption to go outside the wire deserves our respect, at the least for their loyalty to their own duty. That applies to soldiers, contractors, government civilian employees, *and* reporters.

I have a hard time applying this to the traitorous liar Kevin Sites (and his infamous Fallujah report), but even he gets credit on some level.... though I'm not sure which one.

From what you know, would the fact that he's being moved out of country mean his injuries are bad -- or that he's just a non-combat and they're getting him out of there?

Your words, not mine. You said in your post, you were going to protest "like the American Left..."

Again, I ask, "You're going to lower yourself to their level?"

You know we're better than that.

Well put. I don't understand why people choose to immitate those they despise.

How to receive a head injury with the helmet on?

Explosion(s), then small arms fire. Really only protects the crown, upper brow, and some of the ear. If they were above the explosion(s), which is likely, it is amazing that they were not wounded more grievously.

On one end of the spectrum we have reporters like Michael Kelly, who would definitely have been evenhanded and steady in his approach as an embed.

On the other we have seditious little bastards like Kevin Sites who did definitely manufacture news implicating the very troops who were defending his life in a combat zone. His story from Fallujah was one of the most astonishing acts of reportorial malevolence I have ever seen.

Where Woodruff stood on this spectrum is completely and utterly unknown, and it's not fair to insult him at this point.

It will be very interesting to see what effect this incident might have on his understanding of our military, our soldiers, and the war.
