With at least 52 Senators already on record in support, it's clear that--short of some smear ex machina--liberal Democrats can't stop Samuel Alito from being confirmed to a seat on the Supreme Court. So it's a good moment to consider what this says about our politics and what it means for the Court as it enters a new era.

Yes, and Frist called for a vote on Monday to end debate. So if all goes as reported, then they will vote for confirmation on Tuesday.

I'm hoping for three more exits from the bench on Bush's watch. Ginsberg, Stevens, and Souter ,also has to leave to try and save his home from being bulldozed......, Wouldn't that be lovely?
I think that the days of "Borking" are officially over. Alito is exactly the sort of nominee that the mainstream media said that we'd NEVER get approved (i.e., a solid conservative with a paper-trail). His success proves that as long as the nominee is extremely smart and extremely qualified and has the support of the Republican base, we can prevail.
Kennedy is turning into a reliable leftist vote.
If Alito is confirmed, it will still be 5-4 in favor of the leftists, as SCOTUS's last decision made clear.
So, we still need to appoint one more justice before Bush's term runs out. Let's hope that Ginsberg or another leftist judge steps down before the time runs out.
Of course, if another reasonably conservative Republican is elected in 2008, then that should do it. But I'm not counting on it. We don't yet know who will replace Bush as leader of the Republican party.

get a conservative leaning republican president elected and then we could really get things going in the right direction. we need 3 more right-minded justices to even begin to repair the havoc that activist judges have wreaked on our society in the last 30 years. that is something to get excited about and i hope that right-minded citizens get involved in sufficient numbers to allow us stronger control of congress this november.
i like george allen on most issues-remember, you will hardly ever get a nominee you agree with 100% of the time. ie. my problem with bush is border related

And unlike Joe LIEberman during impeachment, Senator Byrd voted YES on confirmation.
Those lib dems on the Court will stay till they draw their last breath. They won't be giving this President another pick for the Court.
