If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.

We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

That type of fabricating requires major patience and planning skills...plus great eye/hand coordination.

Had to tub 3 wheel wells on my 84 Trans Am this summer past.
That was alot of planning and cramped area work.
I'm not sure I could do that as a day job : )

I'm sorry but what I said is sadly true. On a New Zealand scale half of US liberals and institutions like the Brookings Institution would be National Party supporters. In other words, if you think the Dems are wacky left, you are very likely to be (like me) regarded as rabid-right in this country.

No cricket - we still use pencil and paper. I like it best. Every ballot is hand counted.

Better, I think than the technological gymnastics we go through. . .for every 'upgrade' there is a downside, it seems. . .and we have had a lot of 'upgrades'.

But if you take into account how many seats the NDP is getting, it seems to me that the Left still has a certain hold over Canada.

In Ontario, the Conservatives elected 16 new MPs. The Liberals used to have 75 they now have 59. So the Liberal numbers in Canada's most populous province have shrunk still further. The reason the Liberals still have over 100 seats is they're all their urban core seats. But the Conservatives shut them out of Canada's wealthiest province and they consolidated their gains in rural and suburban Canada and established a beach head in French Canada. None which they had in 2004. So even if the Liberal vote percentage remained the same, the Liberals were reduced from being a minority government to being a minority party in the opposition and the good news is Martin is gone from public life. So when you put this all in context, Canada had a night to truly remember.

As Mark Steyn says, he got it right but underestimated the appeal of a gang of corrupt kleptocrats to Canadians. Buying votes with people's money is a very effective way of staying in power. But inept ruthlessness only buys you defeat. And the Liberals' troubles are just beginning. Interestingly enough, the Conservatives ran a close second to the Bloc in 37 Quebec ridings. If they had picked those up they would have a 161 seat majority in Parlianent. So the Bloc is well aware support for separatism is soft in La Belle Province and many Quebecois, who are not Lefties, have voted for the Bloc in the past because there was no viable alternative to the Liberals. (There is no a credible federalist presence in the Conservatives.) I just admire the people of my native province. They're more true to the ideal of Canada than English Canada will ever be.

I wonder how many NDP voters really would have liked to have voted for the Marxist-Leninist, Communist, or Green parties instead?

I hope someone does one of those election maps like the county-by-county maps that have been done for the last couple of American elections.

Gilles Duceppe can read the election returns. The Conservatives are now the party of all of Canada. And we now have francophone Conservatives in Parliament. Its going to be a very different 2006.

A lot of French Canadians will tell you they want their culture and language protected. They want to be equal partners in their country. They support a separatist party not because they necessarily want out but because they never trusted the Liberals to play straight. This morning there's that warm glow of national unity from coast to coast. Canadian conservatives may still be psychologically outnumbered but they are no longer on the outside looking in and neither are the people of Quebec. A small group of insider Liberals cutting corrupt deals won't run the nation like their own private family again.

I diagree. The Canadian appetite for another election so soon is doubtful. Further, the libs don't want another election until they've regrouped.

Harper's biggest problem is to keep the radicals (Canadian view) in check, and to make sure no defections occur to other parties.

The best news out of this Election (other than the fact that the right won) is not the disintegration of the libs (didn't happen) but the surprising weakness of the BQ.

While the libs can point to the fact that scandal brought them low, what is the BQ's excuse?

There goes seperation my friends and we can thank Harper for that, Canada can thank Harper for that.

If he get a majority next time, he could be one of the greats.

And yes to all who have read my previous negative posts on Haper, I am eating crow. I was wrong and I apologize.

A lot of the soft Grits returned to Mama. But the Conservatives slayed one of the longest ruling dynasties in Canada and brought down Martin and his corrupt crew. Sure, a majority would been fantastic but the West is in. Preston Manning and Stockwell Day have seen that vision come true.

The fact of the matter is the Conservatives have arrived. This is not the same as with Brian Mulroney's victories but when you considered how long the Liberals ruled with no opposition its amazing. Tonight the Liberals are leaderless and bankrupt, the Bloc is subdued, and Layton is playing go along. I think you'll find a lot of people focusing on cleaning up Ottawa and now we'll find out where all that stolen money went. And we'll get accountability - key word there.
