Both plan to make it top priority this year
After several failed attempts to pass a statewide ban on assault weapons, Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said Tuesday they will make the initiative a top priority in the current session of the state legislature.
In a joint news conference, the two Chicago Democrats called on the General Assembly to support their proposal to ban the manufacture, sale and possession of semi-automatic and .50-caliber weapons.
Blagojevich said his plan would do away with some of the most powerful guns on the market, and that it therefore doesn't affect the rights of law-abiding gun owners who want weapons for self-defense or hunting--a point vigorously put forth by gun-rights groups.
"We don't need to have TEC-9 assault weapons, Uzis or AK-47s to protect our homes, protect our neighborhoods or to go hunting," Blagojevich said. "And you certainly don't need the .50 caliber sniper rifle to do anything but act as a terrorist and be a criminal and a gangbanger."
The governor will make a pitch directly to the General Assembly when it convenes for his annual State of the State Address on Wednesday. That speech comes two years after the expiration of the federal ban on assault weapons, after Congress failed to re-enact it.
Even before the expiration, law enforcement officials and gun-control advocates have been trying to enact some form of assault-weapons ban at the state level. Seven states have done so but in Illinois, efforts have failed by a handful of votes.
Still, Blagojevich and Daley think there may be some momentum behind their efforts. Last year, lawmakers sided with gun-control groups on several votes, including one to require background checks for all sales at gun shows.
Daley said the next step is to get rid of assault...

Assault is an ACTION, not a device.
I hate it when my local gang hangs out on the corner with 5 foot long rifles.
No, the next step is get rid of "assault politicians".
While the rest of the country steadily eases gun ownership restrictions, these buffoons will steadily make it more difficult.
That's because they are so concealable, and very quick to be brought to bear.
Time for a smack down...
Welcome to "The Peoples Republic of Illinois".
"And you certainly don't need the .50 caliber sniper rifle to do anything but act as a terrorist and be a criminal and a gangbanger."
What an absolute moron. I can just see some criminal and/or "gangbanger" lugging around a .50 caliber rifle.
Does this idiot have any idea just how big, and how heavy, those things are?
These are already banned, Bag-o-s**t.
No, the next step is get rid of "assault politicians".
Yep. Especially DemoRAT and RINO politicians!
These political prostitutes never let logic get in the way of a good emotional appeal to ignorant people. After all, that's how they get in office and stay there.
A .50 caliber ban obviously would include most effective black powder hunting, target-shooting and re-enactment weapons from .54 caliber Pennsylvania Flintlocks and .75 caliber Brown Bess's to .58 caliber Civil War rifles.
A .50 caliber modern rifle is a fine target weapon for long distance target shooting. Can it be used by a sniper? Sure. But so can a .308.
This is incremental dismemberment of the Second Amendment. And before the "Assault Rifle Bans" nobody could own a fully automatic military weapon without a special Federal permit. The "Assault Rifle Bans" impacted only semi-automatic weapons similar to the still legal handguns commonly purchased for personal defence and police work, except the "Assault weapons" happened to be military style rifles.
These people make me sick. They pander to minority communities with high crime rates by trying to abridge the right of the law abiding citizens forced to live in those communities from owning a weapon for their own defense. They instead try to sell them bill of phoney goods that by depriving them of THEIR right to own a weapon, it will in some way impact illegaly owned guns used by criminals. They do this to placate the racialist hucksters like the Sharpetons and "Reverend" Jacksons and radical pacificist sects like the United Methodist Church and their clones who push this anti-gun stuff.
And make no mistake about it, the more types of weapons they succeed in banning, the more they will attempt to ban other types until the Second Amendment becomes in effect, a cheap piece of used toilette paper.
Someone needs to remind Bag-O-Sh!t the capitol is in Springfield, not Mikey's office.
"While the rest of the country steadily eases gun ownership restrictions,.."
Don't be so optimistic - there's New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, - uhh, excuse, I forgot to notice that you said "the rest of the country". I forgot New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Maryland are barely part of the U.S. anymore.
Oops - I mean little Richie's office. I'm a dumb@ss...
Blagojevich, you Son of B.... !!!
Yeah. His mother is probably a liberal too.
The question that needs to be asked of these gun grabbing goofs is
Gvr.(keno aint gambling) Blago or Mayor (what hired truck?) Daley:
Could you please give us the number of violent assaults, robberies, muders committed in Chicago by individuals that posess a valid FOI card, and compare that number to the the same crimes committed by individuals that do not have a valid FOI card?
The looks you will get from those two mopes will be priceless.
Then ask them how many were committed using 50 cal weapons.
I'm so sick and tired of fighting with these jerks. The issue comes up every year.
"My sons friend asked me what I was working on in the garage. I told him its a gun barrel for my rifle. His words were "I thought guns were bad".
THERE YOU HAVE IT. The NEA strikes again. I hear the same blather from my grandson. I suspect they all get it from those politically correct zombies we pay to "educate" them.
A lot of teachers and all of their unions are anti-Republican, anti-conservative, anti-gun, anti-Christian, and anti-American.
