Guitarist Jimmy Page of the band Led Zeppelin has been voted the top guitar soloist of all time for the song Stairway to heaven.
According to contactmusic.com, Page's performance topped the survey held by the website aboutguitars.com and beat out the likes of Eddie Van Halen for the track Eruption.
The third place was occupied by the dual guitar solo by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird.
The top 10 guitar solos are:
1. Stairway to heaven - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
2. Eruption - Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
3. Freebird - Allen Collins and Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
4. Comfortably numb - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
5. All along the watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
6. November rain - Slash (Guns N' Roses)
7. One - Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
8. Hotel California - Don Felder and Joe Walsh (The Eagles)
9. Crazy Train - Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)
10. Crossroads - Eric Clapton (Cream)
All this talk about music got to me. Had to crank up the external HD and listen some real rock. Just finishing up MONA on Happy Trails.
Oh yes! That's a great one. Great playing, plus I love his fuzzed-out tone.
Another one: the solo on Steely Dan's "Do it again". Wow.
Also, don't know if it's been mentioned, but Richard Thompson's solo on "Hard on Me".
bump
Molly Hatchett "Fall of the Peacemakers" dual guitars........awesome
Quicksilver veered way to the Left in 1971 with What You Gonna Do About Me?.Its not a bad song musically but has some embarassing lyrics like"I smoke marijuana, but I can't get behind your wars"
Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Earl Klugh - some great guitarists.
I found it...I need to listen to it a few times before I will like it, you know how that works.
I really like how the Dead played this back in 81-82.

click on the Its all over now, baby blue (whatever setting works for you) you will figure it out.
I was at this show, I liked the Deads version of this...I have many awesome Bob versions.
"Who Do You Love", Pts. 1, 2, and 3 can't be far behind. Good choice!
Forgot about him... where did he go? He got booed off the stage in South America in 2001 or 2002 because he stood up for the United States. He told them to go eff themselves...
I would totally disagree on Hendrix. He has no peers on the guitar, living or dead (except maybe Leo Kottke or Yngwie).
(I can play Suicide Solution (Randy) or Bloodbath in Paradise (Zakk) note for note, just to give you a reference for skill level.)
Blatant leftist politicism or freakism does a band in for me-I just can NOT listen to Jefferson Airplane.I don't like psychedelic music very much. It makes me feel icky.
All of my favorite albums I had to listen to at least three or four times before I even began to realize how good they were. Just keep listening...
allofmp3.com is spyware free.
And, you can choose to buy in 128, 256 or 320 bitrates.
Most songs cost 8 to 25 cents apiece.
I'll try that now,I'm not having much luck right now with "Bridge Of Sighs". Thanks:)
Thanks for the link to the Dead's version of "Baby Blue". I'm listening to it right now. Sounds great. I didn't even know the Dead did this song. Never heard a bad version of a Dylan song.
I have met and spent some time with Jorma Kaukenan and Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane (well, I met them in the late 1990s, not during the 60s).
They are far from leftists. Jorma is a gun nut and raises his American flag every day. He also is a bit of a history buff and can usually tell you what happened in American history on whatever day it happens to be.
Listen to his CD "Land of Heroes" and you will see how far from a leftist freak he is. He's actually one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
Technically, they were a little ahead, since I just listened to the whole LP in order.
Just started on Wishbone Ash. Good stuff. Love those two lead guitars.
Ain't that the truth?
I have been a monster Pink Floyd fan for 30 years, but disliked every one of their albums until I listened to it about 20 times.
Then, I became awed by the brilliance of it.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN - version No. 5 (although others may appeal to you more)
(Long intro)
She is evil and cold
she seeks power and gold
And she swears shell be back in the White House
She makes plans every day
her dream wont go away
And she swears shell be back in the White House
She was sent straight here from hell and she swears that she will be back in the White House
Theres a sign on her wall
that says Freedom Must Fall
It is clear that it has just one meaning
Children walk by a brook
who do not know shes a crook
And that shes spent her whole lifetime scheming
Ooh, you should be frightened
Ooh, you should be frightened
Its the sign of the beast
as we look to the East
For this nation our hearts have been grieving
With notorious deeds
shell do all that she needs
Shes perfected the art of deceiving
Ooh, you should be frightened
Ooh, you should be frightened
And the rumor is soon
shell be playing her tune
As a piper shell have the RATS follow
She has masked what is true
what she tells them, theyll do
Propaganda they easily swallow
If youre dare questioning the motives of true believers
They all will say that you are hateful
Cause everything that she is doing is for the children
Understand, you should be grateful
Ooh, you should be frightened
Your head is spinning and it wont stop
what is this evil?
The scene has almost become ghoulish
The left succeeded and dumbed down the whole population
She is the hope for all the foolish
And as her plan moved down the road
out of the shadows Satan strode
Shes been his tool all along
we soon will hear his fiery song
She played the victim and the wife
to Satan she has pledged her life
Great powers always been her goal
to get it she gave up her soul
Its time to all drop down and prayyyyyyyyyyy
pray
pray
Because Hillary swears shell get back to the White House

THE ORIGINAL - Stairway To Heaven
There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.
There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.
And it's whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How ev'rything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
Got to see Wishbone Ash AND Quicksilver at a two day concert at Pitt Stadium in 1972. Roy Buchanan and the Chamber's Brothers were there too. I was SO effing glad that I went. Quicksilver started with "Cobra" and Dino was pounding away on two giant conga drums about three feet high. The first words out of his mouth were "Come on, people"!
