Guitarist Jimmy Page of the band Led Zeppelin has been voted the top guitar soloist of all time for the song Stairway to heaven.
According to contactmusic.com, Page's performance topped the survey held by the website aboutguitars.com and beat out the likes of Eddie Van Halen for the track Eruption.
The third place was occupied by the dual guitar solo by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird.
The top 10 guitar solos are:
1. Stairway to heaven - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
2. Eruption - Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
3. Freebird - Allen Collins and Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
4. Comfortably numb - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
5. All along the watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
6. November rain - Slash (Guns N' Roses)
7. One - Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
8. Hotel California - Don Felder and Joe Walsh (The Eagles)
9. Crazy Train - Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)
10. Crossroads - Eric Clapton (Cream)
'Cheapnis' by Frank Zappa
That's exactly what I thought. How Rossington/Collins can make it and Stevie Ray doesn't is a mystery.
No Andres Segovia? Those other guys were rank amateurs by comparison.
That question may be above her IQ.
Aww...geez! Stairway to Heaven?
The local guitar shop here has a big sign:
No Stairway to Heaven
is Allowed
On These Premises!
Violators Will Be
Ejected from the Shop!
What and who is contactmusic.com and why should we care what they think?
Hendrix's solo on the Warner live double album version of "Hear My Train a Comin'" is, without question, the most incredible solo in the history of rocknroll.
David Gilmour has hit many out of the park, as well.
In Jazz, Joe Pass and Django Reinhardt laid down some unbelievable solos every time they sat down to play.
And in the Blues, Elmore James' solo on "Twelve Year Old Boy" is the gold standard.
No Steve Vai? No John Mclaughlin, for goodness sake?
And it's not even subject to argument
i assumed they meant rock solos, if you start throwing country/folk guys in then you've got to deal with virtuosos like Leo Kottke and then jazz guys like Django... i don't think they meant the top 10 best guitar parts, but more like the top 10 high-flying rock solos.
No Al DiMeola?
I'd add Al Di Meola to the list also.
Now THAT's funny.
Ditto that.
I thought I was the only one left in the US that still liked Trower.
my fav. zappa solo is The Muffin Man, i'm not allowed to listen to it in the car anymore because i stop paying attention to the road.
I playe in a band whose lead guitariaat just loved freebird. When I hear it now, it's like fingernails scraping a blackboard.
I spent my Sophomore year in college listening to one of my fraternity brothers learn to play the lead guitar part for "Black Magic Woman". I have only recently (35 years later) recovered from that experience. John Holly, are you out there???
Freebird and Stevie's remake of Little Wing are both great pieces of music. However, I think Joe Satriani and some of the "surfing with the alien" stuff should be up here. As well as Hendrix's Machine Gun.
