If we go through the UN it will take over a year to do anything about Iran giving them more time to get weapons in place.

I hear that Iran has learned plenty from Iraqi's mistakes, like they have spread their nuclear facilities all over the country making a "one quick pass" bombing run mostly impossible. And has anybody read Col. North's latest book? Major heads up from a very savvy marine and the main theme is watch out for Iran and the leftover KGB.

"Of course, if you believe the Mahdi is coming in less than two years, and his coming will be because of world chaos, they don't have much time, do they?"
Almost enough to make you wonder if they have a mahdi picked out already, and a backup too.

If Iran was only interested in using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, they wouldn't need to make such threats. In fact, it would be in their own best interests to allow inspections at all times and places. Iran is a sovereign nation, as are we. If they want to kick out the UN that's their business. They can face the consequences if we have to act upon less than reliable information.

The world does not. The question is whether or not President Bush and the USA have the stomach for it.
The US is pinned down in Iraq at the moment. This is no doubt the cause of the rhetoric and actions coming out of Iran. To go after Iran at this time, the US will have to get on a full war footing with a military draft. We will need many more troops. The Middle East isn't the only region with tyrants looking for opportunities to engage in mischief.

Iran's been asking for an ass-whuppin' for decades now. They've been getting pass after pass after pass since peanut farmer was in charge.

I think the League of Nations had more credibility than the UN does at this point.

Baloney. The tactical objective in Iran is to eliminate its nuclear capability. We could do it partially by air power, but more effectively by air strikes combined with landing military personnel at each nuclear site.
We don't have to occupy the country. We don't have to rebuild the nation. Once we decapitate the mullahs, we don't even have to take out their army. Let them duke it out between the pro-democracy crowd and the the Islamic crowd.
The diplomats will have a cow. That's another benefit.

They can face the consequences if we have to act upon less than reliable information. Agreed. Unfortunately, either way we go, many will die. Such is the way in dealing with tyrants, there is no good way to deal with them, only the better way.
In this case, dealing with them now is the by far the best option. Domestic politics will make that very difficult to accomplish. Considering the howling going on over Iraq, can you imagine the reaction of the Rats to an invasion of Iran? And poor Jimma's legacy will be torn to shreds!

If Iran gets nukes it will use them on Israel. Israel will, of course, respond, making most of the Middle East uninhabitable for decades. Middle East oil will be unavailable. The world economy will crash, with most of the world plunged back to 19th century living. North America will be dropepd back 100 years with small pockets still having current technology (mostly military assets). The Stock Market will evaporate. Asia will suffer radiation deaths in the tens of millions with hunderds of millions sickened. The Americas will also be hit but to a lesser extent. Did you forget the /sarcasm tag?

The tactical objective in Iran is to eliminate its nuclear capability. More correctly, that would the be primary objective. A secondary objective would be to ensure Iran is not the haven for transnational Islamic terrorists it has been, and still is.
We don't have to occupy the country. We don't have to rebuild the nation. Once we decapitate the mullahs, we don't even have to take out their army. Let them duke it out between the pro-democracy crowd and the the Islamic crowd.
Given the secondary objective, the above is correct if you remove the word "don't", and replace the last sentence with "We must ensure that the pro-democracy crowd wins."
If the US military/domestic situation does not allow the secondary objective to be pursued, then we may pursue the course you propose. But it will only delay the accomplishment of the secondary objective, which must still be accomplished.
