Specter:

this is about the first time Leahy and I haven't agreed about something.

We are going to proceed on the 17th. I thought the Dem. Caucus knew about the scheduling.

I like how Leahy keeps saying this is the THIRD nominee for this seat (because Roberts was originally the nominee for this seat).

Democrats will of course put it over a week. They say they will be nice, get a month delay from december, get another week delay at the 1st of january, act all lovey-dovey, and then when it's time to live up to their end of the bargain they renege on the deal.

They did this with the Roberts hearing.

Leahy says this is becauase they are all doing this because of Martin Luther King day, as if that is some sort of surprise that popped up at the last minute that they couldn't expect.

I don't know why Specter doesn't say "let's just have the hearing on next THURSDAY then, so you can have your weekend."

Specter should fault Leahy for not being able to control his own caucus.

Specter has decided to vote for Alito -- not out of party loyalty.

That's not what they are after.

I think this is part of a test to see how long that they can drag it out.

I also think that there are teams of Dems trying to misconfigure something to make Alito withdraw.

I callled Bill Bennett's show this morning and made that point. The pro-Alito witnesses actually know him, the Dem side is just a 'round up the usual suspects' potpourri of totally fungible grievance twits.

No, Roberts was nominated when O'Connor announced her retirement. Aliso was nominated when Rhenquist passed away.

Close. Roberts was nominated to replace the retiring O'Connor. Rhenquist passes away, and President Bush quickly puts Roberts ro be confirmed in the vacant spot, and O'Connor agrees to sit on the bench a while longer until a replacement (was Miers, now Alito) is confirmed.

The left had no problem with Roberts because O'Connor is still on the bench. The left doesn't want to let go of O'Connor any time soon, so hence all this badgering of Alito's record, his wife, and his character.

Alito has been more open and forthcoming than Roberts, Bork, or Ginsburg were, but that doesn't seem to be enough for the Democrats.

The Democrats are all about "stall".

Specter: Dems and Repubs have delayed too many hearings.

Lightning over. I'm back. There has been nothing extraordinary that has happened in the hearings so Leahy's earlier caveat is non-operable. ON w/the VOTE.

well, I'll be damned..............Specter sticks!

Sort of. He says the meeting will be held, the vote is scheduled, and if a DEM asserts a right to delay, well, we'll work through that.

Specter announces that he will vote to confirm Alito.
