To read the posts above, if nothing else, feminism has succeeded in selling a myth about itself as in some ways a positive force, as if Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, Wanda Landowska, Lauren Bacall, to cite just a few famous examples (since you wouldn't know any of the unfamous successful pre-feminist women I could list.) Hook line and sinker! So women could not have careers, could not travel, could not ask men for coffee before this saintly beauty came down from the heavens to liberated us all? That, in the words of Jerry Seinfeld, is a shame.

"although I do agree partly with a liberal commentor who just wrote that men really don't want to go back to the 50s."

That's true of men who didn't live through the fifties. If men knew what the fifties were really like, they would.

CORRECTION, DUMMY:

"Feminism had to be invented by males"

By Satan, who is generally regarded as male.

"The so-called "women's movement" was and is a misnomer. Most women reject the anti-male, anti-family bias of the professional feminists. But a dedicated cohort of humorless, bitter, crusading women — mostly from miserable families — was able to dictate policy in some of the most important realms of life."

Feminism is nothing but a BIG LIE and always has been. It failed to fool many of us.

As I've said before on this forum, I love Kate and once had the pleasure of meeting her in person and interacting with her extensively. I can't wait to buy the book.

"And Jessie Bernard, a Pennsylvania State University sociologist, asserted that the "destructive nature" of marriage was both figuratively and literally making women sick."

Ms. Bernard couldn't have been more wrong. Now it's the destruction of marriage that makes women sick, thanks to people like her who along with a some others are the REAL enemies of women.

"The common factor with both is that the males (each child has a different father, a total of 4) had their fun and left. It is tragic, that the freedom of feminism, to free women from all sexual constraints, has enslaved them and only freed the males.

Feminism had to be invented by males, since it has hurt women more than it has helped. Women no longer need to be protected and given security (basic to their nature) so they have kids to have Uncle take care of them. The children suffer. The men are free to do whatever they want."

Wholeheartedly agreed.

"I believe no one has ever done LESS for women than feminists."

Or done more to harm them.

I like that picture of Dowd beneath the book cover.
She's shown with her current boyfriend/bartender/therapist "Lefty".

Feminism for all its faults did open doors.

Hmmm, no it didn't. Does the name Hedy Lamarr ring a bell?

I'm not sure the feminist movement had very much to do with any of those advancements you mention at all.
Long before the opportunistic "feminist movement" as it appeared in the US and some other Western democracies, there were still outstanding females doing things against even greater odds, because there was little social "consciousness" surrounding the "issue" ( it actually WASN'T an issue then, it was just an odd fact of life that there were women like (to name just a few ), Marie Curie, Frida Kahlo, Sarah Bernhardt, Mary McCarthy. The feminist movement didn't "open" doors so much and blast the doorways open, making them wide enough to include great numbers of average women coming through along with the extraordinary individuals who were also women, to come through alongside them. These extraordinary women have always existed, even in the darkest days of female oppression, because they were INDIVIDUALS, and the feminists seized on the opportunity to create a sleight-of-hand to make it look like their consciousness-raising CREATED all female accomplishment that followed the arrival of feminism on the scene.

I am a 'feminist' in that I believe in equal pay for equal work. I believe women should be treated the same as men in the workplace (which means, of course, they should have to meet the same standards as the men). I believe that women should be treated as partners in a marriage rather than property. I believe that women should be treated with respect by men.

I am not a 'feminist' in that I believe that women should stay home with their kids when possible. I believe that women should treat men, particularly their husbands, with respect. I believe that a woman, once pregnant, should love that child enough to allow him/her to be born, regardless of the temporary career or educational sacrifices that might have to be made.

Does Maureen Dowd consider the cover of this book to be a stylized portrait of herself? If so, she is sadly misguided. ;)

haha. Likewise, I'm sure if I had a lot of money I could purchase a perfect husband who would be happy to live in America. Ukranian, maybe? Strong like bull, knows his place, stays with the one who paid for him and would never, never take me for granted.

Funny that you noticed. As a matter of fact, yes, she does. She fancies herself as the voluptuous redhead in the red high heels. Look, the shoes are exactly the same.

I'd hardly call my friends Thai wife passive as SOME people tend to think MOB's are.

At an outdoor summer party a few years ago at my house one of my brothers (a police officer) struck up a conversation with her and found out she had some type of martial arts training. I forget the formal name of it but it is basically fighting with sticks / long swords kinda thing. She would giggle at him and tell him she could lay him out flat in 15 seconds. My friend warned my brother "Hoss, you don't EVEN want to go there... TRUST me".

He is 5' 11" and 220 pounds of muscle. She's 5'4" and 115 pounds soaking wet. My brother has formal wrestling training as well as what you would expect of a cop.

They went at it for about 5 minutes. If my brother could have actually gotten a hold of her he could have snapped her like a twig. That was not to be though...she was as fast as $h!t through a goose.

She was armed with one wooden broom stick, which she promptly snapped over the side of his head... and one much more durable / lethal fiberglass handle off of a garden rake. Those things won't break.

He couldn't get within 4 feet of her without getting lumped up. She was actually toying with him and she handed him his ass about 10 times in 5 minutes... demonstrating that she could easily puncture his throat as well as his heart. All of us were floored at this pint sized lady doing what appeared to be high speed Ballet with a dangerous twist.

He was a good sport about the whole thing and admitted to her how impressed he was over the whole thing as he tended to his 40 or so bloody welt marks all over his torso.

A few months later while at my friends home he let me watch a home video of her in competition taken in the late 90's.
I would not screw with that chick with anything less than a full suit of armour...no way....no how.

"Knows her place"? Yea, right next to her husband, they're a good team. :)

She's a (lethal) doll, soft spoken, humble and has a lot of class and is wicked smart too.

I must say I was very impressed by my friends "find".

...and yes, we DO have "strange" parties sometimes.

:)

What's wrong with "Marrying up"?

Women have been doing it for recorded history?

:)
