"BTW .. he also filibustered the Civil Rights Act for 14 straight hours"
Was it the whole package he was against, or just certain parts? I'm not against civil rights at all, but this act has given the ACLU it's monstrous power, hasn't it?

I don't know whether to help you, laugh at you, or just ignore you. SHIRLEY you jest regarding Byrd??!!?? There is not enough bandwith in the world to list the problem with Robert Byrd. Of course, there is not enough bandwith in the world to contain ONE of Byrd's floor speeches. There is problem number one with byrd.

Do a search for "Byrd" in FR archives and enjoy the fun education regarding "the conscience of the senate."

Here's a question to ponder...O'Connor announced her decision to retire when her successor was confirmed...So after Alito is confirmed..purely hyupothetically...if she refused to retire....took a mulligan..decided that she wanted to stay on..what would happen? I think that after this confirmation, congress should address the issue..no more "if/then" retirements.. Pondered some time ago. I think the President wins. If you ponder to logical conclusion, you reach the question of "If there is no opeing, how can there even be a nomination and hearings?"
I also researched a dozen or so recent retirements, and hers was the ONLY one that was contingent on having a confirmed replacement. All that further lowered my already low opinion of O'Connor.

Although I agree that Alito is a better candidate than Meiers, I will never agree with the tactics used to get Meiers to withdraw. Many conservative pundits lost my respect over their behavior last fall, and they will have a hard time regaining itThought about your post and it sure appears to me that the same thing is trying to be pushed here by the Dem Senators.
They saw the conservatives try Meirs in the Court of Public Opinion, and she withdrew.
Since the Dems cannot indict Alito based on his credentials or record, they are trying to get Alito to indict President Bush. If they succeed (which they will not), you'll see conservatives wanting Alito to withdraw. I wonder if the Dems figure "if we can't get him out, we'll use their own to eat him". We're pretty good at it, actually.

What's so wrong about doing your job until you are replaced? I know she's bad news for the Constitution, but I don't find anything wrong with the WAY she's retiring.
