Just watched that--to his credit, Specter seemed genuinely angry. Loved what he said at the end of his statement: " Let's not run the fellow out on a rail, as seems to happen a lot in this town!"

Well the civil war was about slavery, economics and principles. The land in the south was becoming less productive and the slave owners wanted to be able to sell their slaves to the Western states. The north felt that the compromise in permitting slavery in the first place should not stand any longer. So it was more than contrariness, IMHO

I was listening on the radio...at first he sounded nervous but it seemed that soon left his voice. He sounded great, a very engaging personality.

Even Specter knows how to cover his assets.

... how did the Rybar discussion go? No discussion. Schumer (IIRC) brought it up as an example of extremism, as one of many cases where Alito was "extreme in dissent." Alito can answer that one when he gets the opportunity. Today's stuff was nothing but opening statements, with no back and forth for rebuttal and counter-argument.
To: Cboldt
"Specter's comments here will make the news."
I truly hope the comments do get wide news coverage. They should. However, I'm thinking that many reporters have lost their backbone when it comes to reporting what's right.

C-Span schedule tonight: Beginning at 8pm EST Judge Alito's statement, open phones, then complete replay of today's hearing.

NRO cleared up the Kennedy minority comment.
From the liberal think tank Center for American Progress, an e-mail on Ted Kennedy's statement that "Judge Alito has not written one single opinion on the merits in favor of a person of color alleging race discrimination on the job." "The operative word here is 'written,'" the e-mail says. So it appears that the Kennedy argument is not that Alito has not voted in favor of minority rights in cases of persons of color alleging race discrimination on the job -- Republicans have cited four cases in which that happened -- but that he has not written those opinions.

He was not without humor, too. Was real worried when he first came to the mike--thought he was coughing too much--but then he gave a great opening statement. Think most people will see a humble guy with a good mind--not a raving "right wing nut case" like the MSM tries to make conservatives out to be.

Hatch live on C-SPAN expressing concern that many DEMs on the panel, and some of the GOP, seem to already have their minds made up. I think he raises the GOP "examples" to avoind the appearance of being partisan. The only ones that talked today were the Senators

I do worry about the filibuster vote ... I just don't see it in the cards. Alito's nomination and hearings will be used, OTOH, to create sound bites by the DEMs, as "reasons" why the Republicans must be defeated. I expect vicious rhetorical attacks, but the vote will go forward. Bark worse than bite, and similar cliches apply.

Could you tell me what he says? I can't find a station here that carries Sean live.

Off subject. Just heard on local radio that Marcus Vick has been arrested, again. Brandishing a firearm this time.

Thanks! I LOVED what Coburn had to say--hope there'll be a link to a transcript. He really "unwrapped" the abortion rights crowd as being all about convenience, not conscience!
To: OXENinFLA
Well I am proud of Senator Doctor Tom Coburn, Texas Senator Croyne, Kansas Senator Brownback and one or two others.
Finally someone came down on the hypocrites calling themselves Dimocrats.
Corburn burned the hell out of these immoral lots like Illinois Senator Little Dickless Turdbin, New York Senator Chuckie Smucker and others.
I thought Corburns speech about the brutality of killing an unborn child and saying that those who purport killing these babies are the same ones who scream loudest about civil rights.
