WASHINGTON
Embattled Rep. Tom DeLay decided Saturday to give up his post as House majority leader, clearing the way for new leadership elections among House Republicans eager to shed the taint of scandal, two officials said.
These officials said DeLay, R-Texas, was preparing a letter informing fellow House Republicans of his decision. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt the formal announcement.
DeLay is battling campaign finance charges in Texas and was forced to step aside temporarily as majority leader last fall after he was charged in his home state. He has consistently maintained his innocence and said he intended to resume his leadership post once cleared.
???? I never said I worried about what the Dems think.
I never said the Dems are going to win the next election.
I never said they aren't delusional.
What I said was the Dems have been completely reinforced in their crooked practices of trumping up phony charges against any effective Republican and getting him removed from his post or from office. Period.
This is exactly what happened and we let them succeed.
At some point the Pubs are going to have to stand up and say enough is enough and we can't keep leaving men MIA.
Of course not and I never said that. But they'll have to publish the stories and the public is getting much smarter about media manipulation and reading between the lines.
This country has been pretty much divided between Americans and socialists since at least the 1960s, some would say since the 1930s. Welcome to the party. Some of us have been fighting the good fight for a long, long time.
As for DeLay standing and fighting, I support him all the way in his Texas battle. But the time had come when, innocent or not, his problems were beginning to taint the party as a whole and damage its chances in the '06 elections. It's crucial to maintain Republican control in Congress!!
The Rats wanted to get rid of him, and their sleazy legal strategy worked this time, thanks to a crooked Texas prosecutor. But knowing when to retreat so you can fight another day is very important. It was time for Tom to go and he did the right thing.
Nope. He refused to meet with Gillespie.
No. They need Jim Leach; a good moderate who can reach across the aisle. Have to work together, you know.
My post #123 reminds the reader that it was DeLay himself who insisted on reinstating the GOP rule requiring stepping down from leadership position on indictment. I think DeLay is playing for keeps, long run.
Ronnie Earle had nothing to with this... DeLay went down because of Abramhoff.
I wish to congratulate Ronnie Earle.
The DNC.
The MSM.
The RINO's.
The Spineless Reps in Congress.
Some Freepers on the board that can't see reality.
DU, Kos....
And the weak kneed spineless sell outs of "conservatives" in numedia starting with National Review's Jonah, K-Lo and the whole despicable Al Gore gushing lot.
Well Done. Truly. You earned this victory. It has been proven a prosecutor with no evidence of wrongdoing can indict an effective Republican Majority Leader, and still without evidence bringing about conviction, force him out and cede control to the SOROS backed Mainstream Republicans that work in conjuction with the Dems to prevent conservative agendas from passage.
:::Applause::::
You've all done a fabulous job! Be proud!
As for me I am disgusted and consign the GOP to Hell and all those that stabbed Delay in the back as well as set this precedent for future. I'll be damned if I lift one pinky to come to the defense of all involved in this takedown when the MSM and Earle's come barking at your door.
The only reason at this point I am active is because I feel an attachment to the President, I feel honorbound to protect the troops and see this war to victory though the Republicans are doing their best to lose it led by McCain, Linds, Warner etc...and because I want vengence against people like McCain by ensuring they NEVER sit in that oval office. Otherwise I'd throw up my hands and let the Libs take the country since the damn useless Republicans are not FIT for battle. If they want to do something truly useful, retire en masse and appoint conservatives with SPINES and PRINCIPLE to replace their tenures. We'd all be better off.
It is widely speculated that Hastert will retire in 2008. DeLay must think he has a good shot (if he is cleared of the various charges/allegations), or he would have retired otherwise.
You got the memo from the Redundancy Department of Redundancy??
LOL!
Guilt and punishment by accusation. The next time a deocrat speaks about civil rights, first amendment, fourth amendment, fith admendment rights, tell them to go have sex with themselves. They convicted, on trumped up inuendo and guilt by association, a descent man who beat them at the game of politics, so they used the courts and the media to cut DeLays head off. The Republicans had better speak up and fight back and not continue to stand still while they get bullied out of office.
I have been reading this thread and I see the usual nay-sayers, hand-wringers, and malcontents have made their appearances.
Delay is doing his best for the party and for America. He will be back. Mmemanwhile, we should stand confident, rather than gettting in a mudball fight. Division isn't going to help us one bit.
Remember the screams when the special prosecutor wired Monica? Remember the media howling? Where are they now?
"This time please do not vote for the GOP and do not contribute any money. We do not need people like you."
The campaigns I volunteer for feel differently.
Buzz off, flea!
You're delusional
Head fake? .... On 2nd thought, naw.
Good Lord. If you don't see how effective the Hammer was, then let's just agree to disagree, okay?
"Good Lord. If you don't see how effective the Hammer was, then let's just agree to disagree, okay?"
Effective, definitely.
He effectively got socialist bills passwd like the Prescription Drug Benefit, as well as NCLB which gives the fedgov MORE power over education... not less.
He effectively got passed a porker of a highway bill and a budget, claiming there was "no fat left to cut."
He was effective at getting border security provisions removed from homeland security and intelligence reform bills by lying and saying they'd be adressed later.
Real effective!
"Do you bash the President and the GOP in front of other volunteers? I am just curious how the campaigns feel about this."
Most other hardcore volunteers I've met tend to be more conservative than the candidates. So, yes. When deserved!
I spent the *entire night* before the Nov 2004 election out putting up signs, for example. Then I spent election day being a "runner" bringing tear sheets from polling places back to the campaign HQ. How about you?
I wouldn't call it bashing though - I'd refer to it at calling them out on their liberal leaning actions.
