WASHINGTON
Embattled Rep. Tom DeLay decided Saturday to give up his post as House majority leader, clearing the way for new leadership elections among House Republicans eager to shed the taint of scandal, two officials said.
These officials said DeLay, R-Texas, was preparing a letter informing fellow House Republicans of his decision. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt the formal announcement.
DeLay is battling campaign finance charges in Texas and was forced to step aside temporarily as majority leader last fall after he was charged in his home state. He has consistently maintained his innocence and said he intended to resume his leadership post once cleared.
Maybe Delay's departure will open the door for a more conservative Majority Leader, who will set goals that require the House to legislate in a more fiscally responsible manner. After the last five years the GOP controlled Congress has spent the taxpayers money like liberal Democrats and expanded the federal bureaucracy to levels never seen before in US history. PresBush hasn't vetoed one spending bill of any kind. The brakes have to be applied, immediately. Bush won't act responsibly, then maybe a strong Majority Leader can set the right course.
I'm not going to do your homework.
No. I do my homework. I follow credible leads. There are only so many leads I can follow in a day. Often credibility of a lead correlates to a person willing to support that lead with some rudimentary documentation.
You haven't. You make no point.
And this was illegal?
"The GOP "leadership" failed as usual to stand tall and back one of its warriors...."
True, we can expect the rats to slime any effective leader we put in there. This has nothing to do with anything Tom Delay has or hasn't done. If the majority in Congress can't stand up for one leader why should they be able to stand up for any leader? The rats wrote him a one-way ticket out of Washington on the liberal express, but it's the RINOs who delivered it to him.
Good.
It would be useful if this scandal provides the Fleet reaming our Congress so desperately needs, in order to head off a true revolt later on, but I don't think it'll be enough. Too many government parasites and too many uninformed, apathetic citizens will see to that.
The burden of proof is on YOU.
No, the burden of proof is on you.
But, that's your judgment. All which makes your undocumented statement less likely to be credible.
I couldn't agree more! I tried to say this back when Earle was going to his 5th GJ in order to get the bogus indictment. We're toast if these Pubbies will not stand together - look how the DemonRATs are being split by the Far Left Loonies. Are we going to commence that type of in-fighting also? I get really angry, and just may have to sit out some upcoming elections.
I liked the fight in DeLay, but at the end of the day he is a corporate whore, good riddance
The Earle thing was BS, but the Abramoff thing is not good.
Nothing politicians want to do is illegal in their tiny minds. It was wrong.
Because the Republican Party has no core principles to stand for and defend, other than getting reelected.
You are right..this will not help the Republicans since the Dems and the MSM will simply smell blood and go for more. OTH, REpublicans--unlike Dems who don't care if their representatives or presidents lie, cheat, murder or rape--will abandon leaders who have made unethical decisions.
It says a lot for the REpublicans because they DO stand for their principles...it also says a lot for the Dems who have continued to elect Kennedy (a murderer) Clinton( a rapist) et al. In the meantime, DeLay should resign his post...clear his name...and return.
You are right!Earle had little to do with what happened today!
"But, that's your judgment. All which makes your undocumented statement less likely to be credible."
Don't be a DUmmy.
You can't claim both that Delay is an effective leader, and yet that he has no input into the "House GOP Leadership."
Both are mutually exclusive.
Hopefully the Abramoff scandal will create a boost for the minor parties as more people realize the real depth of corruption in the two major parties.
I want DeLay to be the next nominee for SCOTUS.
