DeLay Will Quit Leadership Post in House

WASHINGTON

Embattled Rep. Tom DeLay decided Saturday to give up his post as House majority leader, clearing the way for new leadership elections among House Republicans eager to shed the taint of scandal, two officials said.

These officials said DeLay, R-Texas, was preparing a letter informing fellow House Republicans of his decision. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt the formal announcement.

DeLay is battling campaign finance charges in Texas and was forced to step aside temporarily as majority leader last fall after he was charged in his home state. He has consistently maintained his innocence and said he intended to resume his leadership post once cleared.

Everyone is pissing and moaning what a loss this is, I don't think so, he has the brains to get out of the way.

DeLay is a smart and aggressive politician. Probably only a few recall that HE personally saw to it that GOP rules reinstate a requirement that indicted members relinquish leadership roles.

Hopefully "culture of corruption" stigma will be appropriately attached.

Yeah. This might be a sign that the Abramoff mess isn't going to be 'disappeared' at the behest of both sides. Still, pretty lame that some just couldn't wait for the official announcment.

If you're correct in your assessment that GOP candidates may be "too conservative" to win (opinions within their own ranks), then the GOP is going down in flames quickly.

I don't think that Delay has the kind of principles that Flake does. So no, I don't think he would be capable of always voting like a small government conservative.

One year ago, Sensenbrenner and 117 or so other Congressment held up the Homeland Security bill because Delay wouldn't attach BORDER SECURITY provisions. He said they would address it in the new year... Well, guess what happened.

I've noticed that there are several in Dem leadership that have disappeared, Reid being one of them. The grumblings about Pelosi started a couple of days ago, and when was the last time you heard from Howard Dean or John Kerry?

I know they've been in recess, but that usually doesn't prevent the lot of them from flapping at the gums for "political advantage" during a recess.

I agree with you,that is why I think Delay could return to Majority leader in 08,but he has alot of socialism to repent for first.While I appreciate his apology,it only came AFTER he was defeated politically by Pence and Company.
