Iran’s Ahmadinejad: Sharon dead and “others to follow suit”

Tehran, Jan 05 – Iran’s hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a crowd of theological students in the holy city of Qom on Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon “has joined his ancestors and others will soon follow suit”, according to the state-run Mehr news agency.

“The Butcher of Sabra and Shatila has joined his ancestors and others will soon follow suit”, Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying. The same report appeared on the website Khedmat, which is run by members of the Iranian president’s entourage.

Ahmadinejad’s announcement of the death of the Israeli Prime Minister comes at a time when Sharon was reportedly fighting for his life on Thursday after a massive brain stroke.

Iran’s state-owned media and newspapers have been reporting the Israeli leader’s deteriorating health condition with evident glee. In a statement put out by state-run news agencies, the Headquarters for the Commemoration of Martyrs of the Global Islamic Movement said “the death of Sharon brings joy to the hearts of Muslims”.

The ultra-conservative president told the radical Shiite Islamists, many of whom have come to Qom from different Muslim countries, that Islam did not restrict itself to geographical borders.

“We must believe in the fact that Islam is not confined to geographical borders, ethnic groups and nations. It’s a universal ideology that leads the world to justice”, Ahmadinejad said.

“We don’t shy away from declaring that Islam is ready to rule the world”, he added.

Ahmadinejad dwelled on his recurrent theme that the return of the Shiite Messiah, the Mahdi, is not far away and Muslims must prepare for it.

“We must prepare ourselves to rule the world and the only way to do that is to put forth views on the basis of the Expectation of the Return”, Ahmadinejad said, referring to the Shiite Muslim belief that the Mahdi, on his return, will establish justice in a world consumed by chaos and corruption.

“If we work on the basis of the Expectation of the Return [of the Mahdi], all the affairs of our nation will be streamlined and the administration of the country will become easier”, Ahmadinejad said.

“Some politicians think we had a revolution so that some could hit others in the head and have one party ruling for some time and another party in opposition for some time. But we had a revolution to achieve a lofty goal, on the basis on the Expectation of the Return”, he said.

Ahmadinejad said Divine Providence was helping Iran’s Islamist regime, as the turn of events around the world picked up speed.

“Our interpretation is that the hand of the Almighty is putting every piece of the jigsaw puzzle of the future of the world in place in line with the goals of Islam”, the hard-line president said.

Ahmadinejad cited the United States occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, both Iran’s neighbours, as proof of his assertion.

“The Global Oppressor [the U.S.] occupied these countries with the aim of putting pressure on Iran, but God let the fruit of this fall on the lap of the Iranian nation”, he said.

Snap out of it. The vast majority of the American public supported the Iraq invasion and a majority continued supporting it for a long time. In fact, whatever polls say now in hindsight about teh wisdom of the invasion, the majority still does not support abandoning the mission. So you simply are mistaken about what garners public support.

Most Americans are sitting around thinking "When the hell is Bush going to do something about those crazy Iranians?"

If it was my choice, we would have hit Iran first. Iran was always the bigger threat, and has been playing the terrorist game since '79. But there was no pretext so we took out Iraq. Like all invasions, it has been a mixed bag. We have achieved all of our goals but one, the media and world opinion has turned against us.

It isn't hand wringing, it is looking at what is going on. We should take out the nuclear facilities of Iran, but to do so would with out a "clear" threat would make the US a pariah in the world. So the US has to play the game for now.

The wild card is Israel. When Sharon dies, I suspect they will strike in short order, probably with US support.

I suppose that's why everybody's so quiet. Either they don't care or they are looking forward to it.

China deals with Iran - haven't they recently pulled in huge oil reserves? Look what the countries that might be hurt or benefited from Iran's actions are doing... And the closer to the Iranians, the more likely they'll respond to the real underlying reality.

Yes, you're talking about Caliphate. This guy's rhetoric makes it obvious that there's no point in anyone using diplomatic means with him. If the people of Iran don't want a bloodbath soon, they better do something about him.

"The taunts are getting louder, more personal and more offensive. It's not an accident. "

I expect there's pressure on Ahmadinjad from the terror cells secreted in this country. The longer they have to wait, the greater their chance of exposure.
As soon as we or Israel move on Iran, expect serious action in this country...things will be 'popping' everywhere...look for serious infrastructure damage, power, transportation and etc.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to stock up the 'hurricane' store room.

yep yep. That's one thing that worries me. If the Muslims quit killing each other, focus their efforts, and reestablish the Caliphate (they would have to agree on a Caliph, which hasnt happenend in HUNDREDS of years)...if all that happened, theirs would be a force to be reckoned with.

"The East and the West belong only to Allah; He guides whom he likes to the right path." - Koran, Surah II: 142.

Ahmadinejad must be repeating that line a lot in his prayers. He seems to believe that he is the new "Mahdi".

There comes a time when reality trumps politics. In national security, that should be most of the time. It's just my opinion that striking the nuclear facilities isn't enough. The Iranian leadership might do what every other tin horn country does and duck for cover, but I think they are nuts enough to attack or at least to undertake large scale terrorist activities. Obviously their current leader is a messianic nut. I don't think we can accept a nuclear Iran or North Korea. Tough choices, but that's why they play "Hail to the Chief" when Bush comes in.

A ten meeting minute maybe to update them all on Sharon? And for them to watch the transfer of power.

2. The Palis have declared impending strikes on Israel when Sharon dies.

Why would they wait? Do they still fear him?

Agreed. It also means Bush is playing the game on a level that you and I can only speculate on. There may be other factors besides this Ahmadinejad in play, such as who might react to a strike on Iran.

He must be stopped now. The whole world will be muslim over my dead body, and that is no light statement.
