Help with California Relocation Info
January 4, 2006 | nbtex

Posted on 01/04/2006 12:44:27 PM PST by nbtex

My daughter has returned from her contract work in Kuwait and is relocating to a job in San Ramon, California. She has been told that San Ramon is mostly commercial and most folks she works with live in Danville and/or Walnut Creek. I sure would appreciate anyone offering me any insights to living in this area.

San Ramon, Pleasanton, lots of places to live there besides Danville (bring gold bullion). Even over the hill in Fremont, anywhere in the East Bay is livable. Plan on expensive housing, however.

Have a lot of money.

Up toward Concord/Martinez gets cheaper as does over the hill to Hayward area.

As a resident and native of the Bay Area, I would strong discourage anyone from moving here unless his or her household income is $250K per year or more.

Put it near Alaska so it will be out of the way. It would also give Nevadans an opportunity for coastal property.

Hiya nbtex ----

I have lived in San Ramon for about 25 years. It is a small area with a number of large adminstrative offices for Chevron, Toyota, SBC, and some various smaller companies. Depends alot on what type of work she is looking for. Many small company operations as well. Best thing for her to do is come and stay a few days (various nice hotels) and do some job hunting.

Cheers!

Meant to say "strongly discourage."

Let's see...

1. Expensive
2. Congested
3. Gun-unfriendly (the state of CA)
4. lotsa libs

She could always do the "live in the valley, commute to the Bay Area" routine. Modesto, Stockton, Tracy, Los Banos, etc.

I used to live in the Bay Area, and these are among the reasons my wife and I left.

she already has the job, she will be going to work for Chevron. If you live that way, what are the differences in these 3 cities? She has been raised in Houston, Texas.

Some people who work in that area also live in Stockton, Tracy, Modesto and other valley towns where the cost of living is more reasonable. However the problem is that there is only one main road from the valley towns to the Pleasanton/San Ramon area.

The crux of the problem is that in California, roads over mountain passes are scarce causing massive traffic jams. Commute from the valley can easily be two hours (or more) each way.

Bart (Bay Area Rapid Transit) also runs to there from points in the bay area (the expensive living areas).

Tell her that we welcome her to Cali and we know she will be an asset wherever she decides to live. Walnut Creek/Concord area is nice.

It all depends on what she is looking for. All along that side of the hills is one city after another. Danville is one of the most expensive. Walnut Creek is the largest and probably would have the widest price range choice.

To the north of Walnut Creek are cities on the bay that are considerably cheaper than those on the bay west of San Ramon. Just south of San Ramon is Pleasonton which is a larger town and cheaper than Danville. The farther you go inland, the cheaper it gets.

During peak hours, the traffic is terrible in all directions.

Buy earthquake insurance even if renting.

Earthquake insurance is no longer affordable. My sister used to carry it until the price went up to over $7,000 per year, so unless you live directly on a fault, it just doesn't make any sense any more. It used to be a viable option in the past.

Posting from Lafayette, one town away from Walnut Creek, about 1.5 towns away from San Ramon. You've gotten some good info in the prior posts. Housing is screamingly expensive unless you're willing to commute pretty far, which is problematical as the roads are 20 years behind the level of development. Nice area (although I myself don't like it for the traffic congestion and the generally relentless liberalism)

Our good friend lives in San Ramon and loves it. They have been there for several years and love their neighborhood, etc. Although they are moving probably back to the east coast to be closer to family later in the year, but they do love the area, weather, etc. And like Mineral Man said, bring loads of money.
