Do not execute Clarence Ray Allen, says Secretary General of the Council of Europe (OUTRAGEOUS)
Council of Europe ^ | January 4, 2006 | Council of Europe

“The death penalty is a brutal and vindictive travesty of justice” said Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, in a statement issued today.

“Following the Christmas break, executions in the United States are expected to resume on 17 January 2006, when Clarence Ray Allen is scheduled to be put to death in the state of California. He is 75 years old. Mr Allen is not an innocent man. He was found guilty of a particularly gruesome crime, but in executing him at his advanced age and decades after the crime had been committed, the authorities are coming close to win the contest in cruelty and vengeance.

The death penalty is aberrant and inhuman in all circumstances, but even more so when it is applied in the cases of children, elderly or mentally ill people. In all member states of the Council of Europe, the death penalty was abolished because it is futile and wrong. The death penalty is not justice. It is a pathetic attempt to satisfy a primitive craving for spectacle and revenge. I therefore call on the Governor of California to spare the life of Clarence Ray Allen and on the US authorities to join virtually all other civilised and democratic countries in the world and abolish the death penalty once and for all. This is not just about the life or death of an old man - what is at stake is the respect for human dignity in American society as a whole” Terry Davis said.

The Council of Europe is the oldest European political organisation, established in 1949 to promote democracy and protect human rights and the rule of law in Europe. It has 46 member states. Abolition of the death penalty is a legal obligation on the basis of Protocol 6 to the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The United States of America, together with Japan, are the only observer states to the Council of Europe to continue executing people.

I'm sure Ruth Ginsburg could find something there allowing international law to trump the Constitution.

Ya, maybe if we tell the euros it's just an extremely late-term abortion they'll STFU.

I hate to be the one to explain it to Mr. Davis, but there is nothing civilized or dignified about coddling the scum of the earth and keeping them around to keep being a detrimental influence on the rest of us. Being dignified and civilized, as a society, requires the culling out of the undignified and uncivilized.

Twas the night before execution and all through San Quentin, the crips were protesting, and liberals were ventin'.

The cyanide hung by the chamber with care, in hopes that the reaper soon would be there.

The inmates were nestled all snug in their bed ; except for Old Tookie, who soon would be dead.

And me with my beer mug, dressed warm in my flannel, had curled up to watch it, on the Fox News Channel.

I set up my TIVO to record the news station, and thoroughly loved the momentous occasion.

It seemed lady justice had gotten her way, and that there would be one less savage today.

When outside the jail there arose such a clatter, the cameras had turned to see what was the matter.

When what to my civilized eyes did appear, but a lineup of actors, all liberal...half queer.

The misguided freaks drew some curious looks, as they proclaimed his innocence; clutching his books.

The tears then flew from Susan Sarandon's eyes, as she nominated him again for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The actors were tethered to an ACLU sleigh, all towing the line of the urban decay.

On Asner, on Penn, on liberal cop-haters, On Sharpton, on Jesse and other race-baiters.

Then at 3:01 all curled up like a beetle, Tookie cried like a bitch, as they gave him the needle.

When up from the actors there arose such a cry, they had failed in their mission, and Tookie DID DIE !!

I heard Bill O'Reilly say, as I turned out my light, Merry Christmas to all ... there was justice tonight !!

Maybe we should ship him over to them and let the council take care of him.

Sounds like someone has read a bit of Vonnegut in their day! ;)

Isn't Europia the place where hoodlums riot, kill, and destroy with impunity?

They're a fine lot to cast stones at the US.

I am of the personal belief that the death penalty lacks effectiveness as a deterrent only because of the lengthy delay between being handed down and carried out.

It was very easy to steal a horse in the Wild West. No one locked them to the hitching post. There weren't lowjack devices hidden under the saddle. Barns and corrals didn't have CCTV systems being monitored around the clock by security guards. The ratio of police/citizens was quite low as well. Despite all this, horse thefts were rare - because if you stole one and got caught, you could count on dancing in air. Very soon. Publicly.

Drawing out the punishment for years means there is a great disconnect between the crime and the consequence. The larger this disconnect, the less it influences the decision to do the crime.

These people are amusing in a bizarre kind of way.

The complaint is now that execution takes a long time and is costly? It is only expensive and drawn out because of the folks opposed to it that keep adding new roadblocks and lame red tape like "automatic appeal". Not surprisingly, most of this gobbledygook has been added via the court system.

This is their other end-run to abolishing the death penalty, folks. They seek to make it cost-prohibitive and too legally complex to make it worth doing.

Ok.

How about we set him free . . . as long as he lives in the spare bedroom of Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

And think of the good that could be done in communities with the money we now funnel into attorney's pockets over this. All of the funds wasted on housing them, appealing thier cases for them, getting them college degrees. All of this money could be so much more usefully spent. But, we're too busy giving the Tookies of the country supplies for artistic expression.
