Weapons of Disruption

Whereas we have no masses, it certainly would be seriously challenging to deliver a "weapon of mass destruction" in the vast majority of geographical areas in the American West, as well as in many areas in the East and South. For instance, Montana is approximately the size of Germany, yet the population hovers only around a million (we have one representative in the House). There is no "metropolitan" area anywhere around, though Spokane is about three hundred miles away. Wyoming has more sheep than people. Utah has Salt Lake City and a few nearby populous areas. Nevada has two populated regional areas, Las Vegas and Reno. North and South Dakota have, well, a few folks here and there. Idaho folks are few and far between. I swear you can drive from San Antonio to El Paso without seeing a city policeman, because I've done it several times. Then there are Arizona, New Mexico, eastern California, inter alia. The point is we have a few population points, while the rest of the states are empty excepted for isolated small communities.Thus, out West we probably need to talk more about "weapons of disruption." (Some folks say "weapons of mass disruption," but we have no masses!)
You must ask yourself: What would I do if I were a terrorist (or a terrorism preparedness instructor) looking into the ramifications of launching a rural terrorism attack? Personally, I would concentrate on considering the consequences of disruption rather than mass destruction. Here are a few scenarios you might want consider when your local rural emergency management/response group gathers to discuss terrorism exercises.
1) Wildland Fire Incidents: Incendiary (mostly wildland) warfare has been used by military strategists for at least 2500 years, over a thousand years before the use of gunpowder. The western U.S. is disrupted, seriously disrupted, every year by wildland fires. Quite a few are started by humans, accidentally and purposefully. Starting dozens of major fires in a dozen western states could be a brilliant line of attack if militants wished to disrupt America. Thousands of security personnel could do nothing and the perpetrator/s would probably never be implicated, much less captured. Are you prepared?
2) Railroad Chemical Incidents: Many railroad main lines go through tunnels. A few strategically placed armor-piercing shells in a series of chlorine cars, along with appropriately staged derailments leaving the leaking cars in the tunnels, could shut down many main line routes in the West. Spin-off scenarios are numerous. Ready?
3) Flammable Liquid Incidents: Bridges are not easily brought down from below and approaches to bridge support structures are often highly visible and randomly monitored. However, on CNN we all have seen many tanker truck accidents involving burning hydrocarbons which have made bridge structures unusable. How hard would it be to have a few terrorists steal trucks and drive them (as opposed to hijacking planes and flying them) to strategic bridges over wide rivers or narrow gorges, ignite the gasoline (or diesel or crude), block the approaches with other incendiary or chemical releases, and make the structures extremely dangerous and impassible to highway traffic? Gotcha!
There are many variations of these themes. You probably have or can make up many more plausible, novel, and easily implemented rural-specific attack scenarios. Design exercises around them. If you want to stop terrorist events you must think like a terrorist and quit fighting last year's war!

'TERRORIST BOMBS FOR TOY PLANES'

A GANG of al-Qaeda terrorists planned to strap bombs on to remote-controlled model planes, a court was told yesterday.
They also wanted to set off simultaneous bombs in the UK, claimed supergrass Mohammed Babar.
He said a Canadian man came up with the model plane plot and another to spread computer viruses.
He told the Old Bailey that the man, Momin Khawaja, took equipment to Pakistan for the terror cell in 2003 and wanted to visit a training camp Babar set up with them.
Babar said: "He had brought over a medical kit, money, some invisible ink pens and a light."
At a meeting with a third man, Salahuddin Amin, "they talked about computer viruses, how to make computer viruses and create computer sabotage", he said.

"They discussed some things that Khawaja and his brother were working on. They were working on GPS-navigated model planes - you could fit them with explosives."
Asked if Khawaja, who is awaiting trial in Canada on terror charges, was involved in a plot to bomb the UK, Babar said: "I knew he was aware of it."
Babar also told jurors about a conversation with defendant Omar Khyam about bombing the UK.
He said: "He wanted to do multiple bombs, simultaneously or one after another on the same day. We all referred to some potential targets ... pubs, nightclubs and stations."
American Babar, 31, has been given immunity to testify against Khyam and six other Britons who deny plotting explosions. The trial continues.

Pots and pans, I prefer the fancy coated cast iron, over all
types of pots and pans or skillets.....but not for travel,
as it is a glass type coating and you don't want to stir it
or enemal pans, once the coating breaks.
I don't use the non stick teflon coatings on anything, as
I have known for over 30 years that if they burned, your
birds will die from the fumes.....and they scratch and I
don't have the right taste buds to eat teflon coatings.
Stainless steel is next best. for campfire cooking, use
the steel or plain old style cast iron, a set will not
be that expensive at walmart and camping supply stores.
I wouldn't buy the most expensive, why? better you put that
extra cost in rice and beans.
I have a set stainless stock pots that I bought through
the mail, in 2, 3, 4 gallons sizes, they would not be all
that good for the cooking on a campfire, unless you kept
stirring them, but would be lovely for boiled water, etc.

You should learn to use sourdough starter, always store
your yeast in the freezer, when bought in bulk,
there is one tablespoon of yeast in those foil packets,
I kinda use a rounded tablespoon of yeast, not heaping, as
I like the taste of yeast in bread, but not over powering.
You will not be able to buy yeast or anything, if there is
not a store........you can freeze sourdough starter, that is
what I did when I did not bake that week.
It can also be dried, but I have not done that.

Like (LOL) my last starter, came from a sourdough cooking
class at the Mormon Church, it was 125 years old and came
from a mining camp in Alaska........and if I am blessed,
the 10 year old package in my freezer will still be good.
I have made it from scratch, it will work, but the extra
love that went into keeping one alive for 125 years, makes
it taste better.......

“Suicide” bombings have begun again.
Three young Israelis were murdered Thursday evening in one such attack at a gas station near the Samarian settlement of Kedumim.
The terrorist was an Arab believed to have been dressed as an orthodox Jew.
He had apparently hitched a ride from his Jewish victims before blowing himself up and destroying them and their car.

N.Y. bottled water company's products recalled

BURLINGTON, Vt. --Vermont officials are questioning why neither the company nor New York state officials notified them about a recall of bottled water possibly contaminated with dirt and coliform bacteria.
Vermont's 13 Price Chopper supermarkets and a distributor in East Barre were the only locations in the state where suspect water was delivered, said Roger Jakubowski, owner of North Country Spring Water Ltd. of Port Kent, N.Y.
North Country's water is carried under several different brand names. The affected products bear the label "NYSHD Cert. #078."
The Water Supply Division of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation has suspended North Country's permit to distribute water in the state until problems with the water are remedied.
New York Health Department spokeswoman Claire Pospisil said state authorities there had not confirmed any illnesses tied to the tainted water.
Jeanine McCrumb, a compliance analyst with the Vermont water division, said North Country notified the media, which it is required to do by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. But she said it did not notify Vermont officials as required by its Vermont permit.
"If it's something that is a public health issue, they should be picking up the phone right away," she said.
She added that New York officials, who conducted an unannounced inspection at the company March 20, have not forwarded their findings to Vermont.
The FDA said coliform bacteria violate the New York sanitary code and indicate other harmful bacteria might be present.
In addition to the coliform were diatoms -- material like clay and dirt. McCrumb said that could indicate a problem with the company's filters.
"It could make you sick, but it's not going to kill you," McCrumb said.
Price Chopper spokeswoman Mona Golub said that company removed North Country water from its 113 stores in the Northeast the day the recall was announced. Customers who bought the water can return it for a refund, she said.

The U.S. military plans to detonate a 700 ton explosive charge in a test called “Divine Strake” that will send a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas, a senior defense official said March 30.
