World Terrorism : Weapons of Disruption Onging...

Weapons of Disruption

C 2006 Frederick J. Cowie, Ph.D.

Whereas we have no masses, it certainly would be seriously challenging to deliver a "weapon of mass destruction" in the vast majority of geographical areas in the American West, as well as in many areas in the East and South. For instance, Montana is approximately the size of Germany, yet the population hovers only around a million (we have one representative in the House). There is no "metropolitan" area anywhere around, though Spokane is about three hundred miles away. Wyoming has more sheep than people. Utah has Salt Lake City and a few nearby populous areas. Nevada has two populated regional areas, Las Vegas and Reno. North and South Dakota have, well, a few folks here and there. Idaho folks are few and far between. I swear you can drive from San Antonio to El Paso without seeing a city policeman, because I've done it several times. Then there are Arizona, New Mexico, eastern California, inter alia. The point is we have a few population points, while the rest of the states are empty excepted for isolated small communities. Thus, out West we probably need to talk more about "weapons of disruption." (Some folks say "weapons of mass disruption," but we have no masses!)

You must ask yourself: What would I do if I were a terrorist (or a terrorism preparedness instructor) looking into the ramifications of launching a rural terrorism attack? Personally, I would concentrate on considering the consequences of disruption rather than mass destruction. Here are a few scenarios you might want consider when your local rural emergency management/response group gathers to discuss terrorism exercises.

1) Wildland Fire Incidents: Incendiary (mostly wildland) warfare has been used by military strategists for at least 2500 years, over a thousand years before the use of gunpowder. The western U.S. is disrupted, seriously disrupted, every year by wildland fires. Quite a few are started by humans, accidentally and purposefully. Starting dozens of major fires in a dozen western states could be a brilliant line of attack if militants wished to disrupt America. Thousands of security personnel could do nothing and the perpetrator/s would probably never be implicated, much less captured. Are you prepared?

2) Railroad Chemical Incidents: Many railroad main lines go through tunnels. A few strategically placed armor-piercing shells in a series of chlorine cars, along with appropriately staged derailments leaving the leaking cars in the tunnels, could shut down many main line routes in the West. Spin-off scenarios are numerous. Ready?

3) Flammable Liquid Incidents: Bridges are not easily brought down from below and approaches to bridge support structures are often highly visible and randomly monitored. However, on CNN we all have seen many tanker truck accidents involving burning hydrocarbons which have made bridge structures unusable. How hard would it be to have a few terrorists steal trucks and drive them (as opposed to hijacking planes and flying them) to strategic bridges over wide rivers or narrow gorges, ignite the gasoline (or diesel or crude), block the approaches with other incendiary or chemical releases, and make the structures extremely dangerous and impassible to highway traffic? Gotcha!

There are many variations of these themes. You probably have or can make up many more plausible, novel, and easily implemented rural-specific attack scenarios. Design exercises around them. If you want to stop terrorist events you must think like a terrorist and quit fighting last year's war!

Peace, thanks, Fred

No, do not loose faith in Farrah, he reports what he
reports what he finds to report, he was right about the superbowl, it was under threat, but our Gov. stopped it,
I recall some of the threats.

Keep in mind the worry the Gov. has over things like ballons and those hobby remote controlled planes that the Gov was so worried about.

Farrah, goes a little further in his posts than the left wants, that is why there is so much against him.

Take Farrah's reports and compare them to the OBL threats and the jihad chatter and you will see where they come from.

Of course, I don't believe everything I hear either, as all brains mal-function at times.....except mine.

We need to dig into the missing Khan scientists and the missing russian scientists.

There are reports on where they are in google.

Jim Dallas is on the radio and I am not gettin KDWN clear, but he said something about wheels falling off the planes at the Las Vegas airport, McLaren is the name of the airport.

Dr. Bill no longer goes into great detail on the nukes that alQ has, he just says they will hit us "any day" and "soon".

He says, " it will be a simple Hiroshima type nuclear bomb or/and a dirty bomb", that it will soon and in more than one place.

He said " I have been attempting to tell you for years what is coming"......................

Not surprised they've found it in the falcons.

I'd say we've learned much here at FR.<<<<<<

Oh, yes, learn we have, but we still don't know how to stop the disaster before it happens.

Imagine what it must be like to be in the CIA or FBI.

I keep hoping that Jim will say something about wheels falling off airplanes in Las Vegas, i missed part of it, but he did open the program with it in his monologue.

Found a wing that fell off:

http://www.google.com/search?client=googlet&q=Wheels%20fall%20off%20airplane%20Las%20Vegas

Jim just said that the illegals are going by the bus load to New Jersey to get the drivers licenses that can be had there by illegals.

Jim Dallas also does a Border program on Friday night, on KDWN.

LOL-The devil gets in all of us, at times.

My brother only found out 2 years ago, how I knew what he had done in 1965.......he was sure that I had read his mind.

But he is the most like me, we got all the Cherokee genes.

It was so easy, I said "no, that is a very bad idea".

He went and did it, then came back, sat on the couch, looked at the floor and didn't want to talk.

So, LOL, I said " you did what I asked you not to do"! and more motherly words.

His response was "How did you know?".........

Any mother would know.....when the floor is more interesting than the other people in the room.

He had already served in the Air Force, but did not come out with horse sense, just lots of learning on how to work with bombs, life.......

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1568205/posts Venezuela to support Iran in nuclear row Reuters ^ | Jan 31, 2006 Posted on 01/30/2006 3:05:54 PM MST by proud_yank VIENNA: Major US oil provider Venezuela stands by its promise to back Opec-partner Iran in its argument with the West over its atomic programme, Venezuela's oil minister said. "Venezuela is going to support Iran in the nuclear dispute," Venezuelan Energy and Mines Minister Rafael Ramirez told reporters ahead of an Opec meeting in Vienna. "We are going to express that clearly to Iran." His remarks echoed a pledge given by Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez last March. Chavez said then that Iran had every right to develop its own atomic energy. Iran is at odds with the United States and the European Union over its decision to resume its nuclear work. Iran says it wants to generate electricity, but the West has its doubts. The European Union said it wanted the United Nations Security Council to step in to the dispute. The United States and its European allies are trying to get Russia and China to back tough diplomatic action against Iran. Concern that oil exports from Opec's second biggest producer Iran could be interrupted – either by sanctions or Tehran withholding supplies – has sent oil back towards its record high of $US70.85 ($NZ105.27). It stood close to $US68 on Monday. Last September Venezuela, the world's fifth biggest oil exporter, was the only country to vote against a resolution at the UN International Atomic Energy Agency that moved towards reporting Iran to be the Security Council. Socialist Chavez stepped up his anti-US rhetoric last year after US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called him a "negative force" in Latin America. Since he was first elected president in 1998, Chavez has strengthened ties with anti-US countries like Iran and Cuba as part of a strategy to counterbalance what US influence. Venezuela has a multibillion dollar energy trade with the United States, shipping 1.5 million barrels of crude and refined oil products north every day. Chavez has compared his own self-styled "revolution" in Venezuela with Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution and said both were committed to avoiding the policies of past governments which "handed over our oil to imperialism."

Gang plots border attack (MS-13)
Daily Bulletin (Ontario, california) ^ | 1/30/2006 | Sara A. Carter and Kenneth
Todd Ruiz

Posted on 01/30/2006 10:05:38 AM MST by Mount Athos

Members of a violent international gang working for drug cartels in
Central and South America are planning coordinated attacks along the
U.S. border with Mexico, according to a Department of Homeland
Security document obtained by the Daily Bulletin.

Detailed inside a Jan. 20 officer safety alert, the plot's ultimate goal is
to "begin gaining control of areas, cities and regions within the U.S."

The information comes from the interrogation of a captured member
of Mara Savatrucha, or MS-13, a transnational criminal syndicate born
from displaced El Salvadoran death squads from the 1980s.

The MS-13 member, who claimed to have smuggled cocaine for the
Gulf Cartel, explained a plan to amass MS-13 members in Mexican
border towns such as Nuevo Laredo, Acuna, Ojinaga and Juarez. The
Gulf Cartel runs its drug smuggling operations from Del Rio, Texas, to
south of Matamoros, Mexico.

"After enough members have been pre-positioned along the border, a
coordinated attack using firearms was to commence against all law
enforcement, to include Border Patrol," the alert states.

Mike Friel, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security and
Customs and Border Protection, would not comment specifically on the
alert.

Through investment, technology and infrastructure, Friel said,
Homeland Security is "determined to gain control of the border."

Law enforcement officials along the border said they had not received
the alert.

Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez of Zapata County in Texas said he was
angry about the alert because he has never received information from
the Department of Homeland Security about this or any other threat
along the Texas border.

"That is something that I was not aware of, but information like this
should be given to us immediately," he said.

Gonzalez said it's another example of poor communication between
law enforcement agencies.

"Since Sept. 11, we heard there was going to be a sharing of
information, but today we still haven't received anything," he said. "All
the information of threat levels, I get through the media."

In Arizona's Santa Cruz County, where in May a sniper shot two
Border Patrol agents in the legs, Sheriff Tony Estrada said he was
alarmed by the documented threat.

"That message seems to be the strongest type of indicator that they
are seriously planning to use force," he said.

Estrada added that it shows how frustrated the smugglers have
become, but said the plot is a "bad idea" that wouldn't work.

"It would be real dumb move," he said. "If that should happen, and if
any of our agents are threatened or injured or killed, it's going to
create a lot of unity and cooperation."

Gonzalez added that his deputies have seen increasing violence from
drug cartels and what he believes are Mexican soldiers working for
them.

A member of the 16-county Texas Sheriff's Border Coalition, Gonzalez
said he would immediately inform other sheriffs.

As a precaution, he would change how his deputies operate, he said.
Some of his deputies have been patrolling the border alone.

"We're going to be better prepared, and the officers will too," he said.
"Unfortunately (the cartels) are not going to wait."

According to a secretary in the office of Texas Department of Public
Safety spokesman Tom Vinger, Vinger said he had no information
about the potential threat.

Andrea Simmons of the FBI's office in El Paso, Texas, said she is
familiar with such threats, but said her office is not investigating any
such attacks.

"We haven't had any specific threats regarding that or any information
for us to be able to follow up on," she said.

AGENTS UNDER FIRE

The alert documents several armed, brazen attacks on Border Patrol
agents between May and January.

Violence at the border has risen dramatically during the past couple of
years, according to law enforcement officers all along the border.

Estrada said crime there is "more competitive, more profitable and
more violent," and that increased scrutiny at the border and
intensified law enforcement efforts have frustrated criminal elements
in Mexico.

A smuggler named Pablo "El Patron" Mercado said he will no longer
tolerate the loss of contraband and has ordered smugglers to carry
firearms, according to a Jan. 13 alert referenced in the document.

Sgt. Benjamin Reyna of the Bisbee Police Department in Arizona said
he's seen much more violence in the past several years.

"It's on the increase," he said. "They have a lot less fear of law
enforcement now."

Reyna said cartel enforcers, smugglers and people suspected of being
current and former Mexican military are taking shots at law
enforcement officers.

CENTRAL AMERICAN INTERESTS

The primary subject of the alert concerns a confrontation between a
U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector and 20 men armed with
assault rifles in the area where a creek feeds into the Rio Grande in
Zapata County on Jan. 9.

The inspector, who was on horseback, said a boat dropped the group
off inside U.S. territory.

Some of the subjects appeared to be carrying automatic assault rifles,
and threatened to shoot the inspector's dogs, the alert stated.

The inspector had his gun and badge hidden under his jacket so the
men could not see that he was a law enforcement agent. He told the
armed men he was a rancher.

"(He) stated that he believed this might have saved his life," the alert
stated.

The inspector, who is fluent in Spanish and has lived near the border
all his life, believed the men were not Mexican nationals, based on
their accents.

The incident report concluded that the men probably were from
Central America and members of either MS-13 or ex-Guatemalan
Kaibiles, a military special forces unit specializing in jungle warfare
and counterinsurgency

anonymous tip -- found the four aboard a bus in the northern city of
Navajoa (nav-ah-HO-. That's about 375 miles south of the Arizona

Hamas Demands Israel Change its Flag, Concede
Islamic Ownership of the Land
Arutz Sheva ^ | Jan 30, '06

Posted on 01/29/2006 7:54:04 PM MST by Fred Nerks

(IsraelNN.com) Hamas spokesman Mahmoud Zahar issued a demand
Sunday evening that Israel remove the stripes from its flag.

"Israel must remove the two blue stripes from its national flag", Zahar
said. "The stripes are symbols of occupation – they signify Israel's
borders, stretching from the River Euphrates to the River Nile."

The Hamas official's comments followed Defense Minister Shaul
Mofaz's assessment at the weekly Cabinet meeting that the newly
elected terror group was "acting responsibly so far."

Zahar also told CNN's Late Edition that the world should not be asking
Hamas to recognize Israel, but rather demanding that the Jewish
State recognize that Muslims are the "owners of the land."

Radar Little Help in Border Tunnel Hunt
AP/TBO ^ | January 30, 2006 | ELLIOT SPAGAT

Posted on 01/30/2006 2:31:06 PM MST by ncountylee

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A U.S. government effort to find drug-smuggling
tunnels underneath the Mexican border with ground-penetrating radar
and other high-tech gear has had little success.

Human intelligence has proven to be the most effective method of
finding the passageways. A case in point: The longest tunnel ever
found along the border was discovered last week after a tip.

The Homeland Security Department said Monday that a Mexican man,
Carlos Cardenas Calvillo, was arrested in connection with the
2,400-foot tunnel, which went as deep as 90 feet and was about 5 feet
in height and 5 feet wide. He was to be arraigned in federal court on
charges of conspiracy to import more than a ton of marijuana.

"The problem is the technology picks up some kind of anomaly or
variation of soil," said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "We go in with big backhoes
and bulldozers, we spend all day doing it, and all we hit is rock or
water tables."

That was what happened earlier this month when high-tech gear
alerted authorities to a possible tunnel near Boulevard, a hamlet
about 60 miles east of San Diego along the Mexican border. A full day
of digging turned up nothing

Police currently have Interstate 40 near Fesslers Lane [in downtown
Nashville] shut down in both directions.

Police say officers are investigating a suspicious vehicle that they
believe may have weapons and an explosive device inside. The ATF is
also on the scene and police are requesting the bomb squad.

Traffic is backed up in the area so drivers should avoid the area.
