I can't blame my slowness on anything but my processor. ~sigh~ Anyway, I have a question that perhaps you can answer. I notice that Firefox uses something like 30,000K of memory (plus more for each tab that's open). However, Opera (of which I am no fan) only uses 20,640K (a little more for each tab opened). Am I right that Opera therefore frees FAH to use more memory? Is 10,000K worth being worried about? (Seems like it would over time.)

You are on the ping list, which is now up to 158 members.

Several folks are from papasmurf's GetLoaded.com site, and don't have FR screennames. Others I can figure out what the screen name is. Several I have no clue.

I keep the ping list up-to-date, so please ping me or FReepmail me if you want on or off.

Is 10,000K worth being worried about?

The key factor is CPU utilization and not memory. It's doing a lot of math and not much data processing. If it's pegging your CPU, it's running well.

Firefox, in my experience, has a memory leak. Put it this way, the longer I leave it running, the more memory it uses. Eventually (after three or four days), I notice it using 90,000K then 100,000K+, then it crashes.

Your mileage may vary, and I have no experience with Opera or FAH memory needs.

What I do know is that Firefox benefits from being shut down and restarting.

Camino is my favorite browser. Not sure why though... just to be different perhaps.

Well, that might be so, but my Win2k platform never needs to reboot. Sometimes I reboot it, but I've never seen it crash (like Win98) in a way that it NEEDED a reboot. The WinXP on my laptop would probably perform just as well but, being a laptop, it is never left on long enough to know.

You'll get nary an argument from me. I enjoy, and am very productive, using M$ products, for the most part. Now, their business practices, that a different story.

If others like them, as well, that's fine. If not, then there ARE alternatives, yes?

As much as I like to play with Firefox (and I do like to), it's ie that get's the job done for me.

My Win2k boxes have been the most reliable OS I've ever used, 'cepting for DOS, of course. If/when it/they crash, it's usually my fault or mean software. :) XP comes in a close 2nd.

Thanks for the info.

Malsua said: "The client "check points" every 3 to 30 minutes defaulting to 15"

I've set mine to 9.

Malsua said: "As to the ping list, that's not me :)."

I just found out that 'texas booster' has a ping list (see post # 44).

Malsua said: "If you're switching from GUI to console, there's a "Pause when done" option. When it's done, shut it down and uninstall then install..."

Thank you.  I'll use that procedure when installing/uninstalling any new programs, etc.

Malsua said: "...so in my opinion don't change to the console purely to pick up some cycles because you frankly won't notice any difference."

Thanks - I will probably just keep the GUI, but I do have 512mb DDR memory with about 150mb available & cpu (AMD 2100) running 100% at 49o F (client at 95%), and 355mb system managed page file (on 1st partition of 2nd HDD).   If I used the console, I might be able to give the client a little more ram, but I'm not sure how much more would be optimum without degrading performance of the system as a whole.

papasmurf said: "...you should know I'm a slow post composer-I read, preview, get side tracked, and re-compose a lot, and I walk away frequently. :)"

haha - that sounds like me, LOL.

papasmurf said: "Is there a faster/better way to multi-"ping" than just typing each name?"

Use notepad to create a list of FReepers with a ; between each screenname, then just copy & paste into the 'TO:' box of the reply screen.  Be sure to save the notepad file and name it something to remind you which ping list it is.

texas booster said: "You are on the ping list, which is now up to 158 members."

Thank you for adding me to your ping list.

It's great to have so many helpful FReeper friends.  Thanks to all of you.

Thanks to all for the tips and mirth -- I regularly blow up my Windows doing stupid things. One thing I found -- if you just hit "Pause work" in the right-click window, and then Restart your PC you lose all the crunches and it devolves back to step 0. I was not happy with that!

Happy Folding New Year !!

How often are the stats pages updated? The log file text indicates that I successfully uploaded my first WU, but I don't show up on the stats page yet.
