U.S. plan for border wall sparks anger in Mexico

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government, angered by a U.S. proposal to extend a wall along the border to keep out migrants, pledged Tuesday to block the plan and organize an international campaign against it.

Facing a growing tide of anti-immigrant sentiment north of the border, the Mexican government has taken out ads urging Mexican workers to denounce rights violations in the United States. It also is hiring an American public relations firm to improve its image and to counter growing U.S. concerns about immigration.

Mexican President Vicente Fox denounced the U.S. measures, passed Friday by the House of Representatives, as "shameful" and Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez echoed those complaints on Tuesday.

"Mexico is not going to bear, it is not going to permit, and it will not allow a stupid thing like this wall," Derbez said.

"What has to be done is to raise a storm of criticism, as is already happening, against this," he said, promising to turn the international community against the plan.

Some sections of the U.S.-Mexico border are marked by fences, but the United States already has erected walls along some heavily trafficked stretches in southern Arizona and California. Those walls, often made of 10-foot-high sections of military surplus steel, typically run several miles.

The proposal has unleashed a tide of ill-feelings in Mexico, where editorial pages are dominated by cartoons of Uncle Sam putting up walls bearing anti-Mexican messages.

Many Mexicans, especially those who have spent time working in the United States, feel the proposal is a slap in the face to those who work hard and contribute to the U.S. economy.

Fernando Robledo, 42, of the western state of Zacatecas, says the proposals could stem migration and disrupt families by breaking cross-border ties.

Robledo, whose son and mother are U.S. citizens, predicted the measure "would unleash conflict within the United States" as small businesses fail for lack of workers.

He said many Mexicans felt betrayed by the anti-immigrant sentiment.

"We learned to believe in the United States. We have a binational life," he said of Zacatecas, a state that has been sending migrants north for more than a century. "It isn't just a feeling of rejection. It's against what we see as part of our life, our culture, our territory."

Who ever sat in for John&Ken (KFIAM640) yesterday was going to town on this topic. J&K have been very outspoken about this topic and the guest host went one step further. It was good. They have podcast available if anyone wants to hear it.

Because of our inattention to this problem for so long we have now created a situation where Mexicans, including the eductated leadership, feel they are entitled to enter the USA at any time. Sad how long we've let it go on to get to this position.

Pretty funny they get mad at us not letting them break the law.

Funny but pretty telling - they have one of the most corrupt police forces in the free world. Breaking the law is expected.

Can we nuke them now? Please? Just a little one?

I'm all for a 50 foot wide mine field backed by a twenty foot solid wall with automated machine guns and a 10' kill zone at the base of the wall.. Leave the bodies for the vultures. It'll derer other stupid terrorists trying to invade

In the modified words of the song: Here's a peso, call someone who cares

I think with the exchange rate, it would be: Here's 100 pesos, call someone who cares

Hmm. And we still want the floodgates to stay open so these folks can pull a Kosovo on us?
