Amputee admits lies, still cites attack (UPDATE)

******************Article************

CANTON - A 52-year-old amputee says three young men tried to mug him as he waited for the bus Monday night, pushing him out of his wheelchair into a fire hydrant, kicking him and then running off with his wheelchair as he lay stunned on the ground.

A Stark Area Regional Transit Authority bus driver who came upon Virgil L. Stewart brought him to the Cornerstone bus terminal, where Stewart collapsed and began choking and shaking violently, a SARTA incident report said. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he was treated and later released.

“I think it’s pretty sick,” said Stewart, who says he lost his lower right leg due to an infection from a Vietnam War injury and the use of his left arm due to a stroke. “I wish I had two good legs, and I’d fight them. They wouldn’t have done that to me.”

Then his bravado changed to vulnerability.

“I was scared because ... I can’t take care of myself.”

Stewart said that around 7:30 p.m. Monday, he had left his brother’s house and was waiting for a SARTA bus to pick him up at 10th Street NE and Marion Motley Avenue. Three men came up behind him, he said.

“They came up to me and asked for a cigarette, and I said I didn’t have one,” Stewart recounted. “They said, ‘Give us your money.’ ‘What money? I don’t have any money. ... I’m sitting here waiting for a bus.’ ”

Stewart said one of the men started frisking him, while another threw him out of the wheelchair. He landed on a fire hydrant, hitting his head and chest against it, he said.

Then the men started kicking him, he said, before fleeing with his only wheelchair as the SARTA bus approached. Stewart said he managed to crawl to a telephone pole and get himself up to get on the bus.

Stewart said after collapsing at the station, he awakened at Mercy as staff put IV tubes into him. He said the doctor told him he was fortunate he hadn’t cracked his skull.

Stewart, a widower who lives alone, says his brother is lending him one of his wheelchairs, but he’ll need it back to give to his mother-in-law in a week. Stewart, who’s recently worked as a Salvation Army bell ringer, said he’ll have to manage with a walker with his prosthetic leg because he can’t afford a new wheelchair.

Stewart described his assailants as three black men in their 20s. One, 5 feet 9 inches tall, was thin and wore a Raiders jacket, black pants, sunglasses and a scarf covering part of his face, the police report said. A second was 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a stocky build, a scar on his left cheek, a black jacket, black warmup pants and red-and-white tennis shoes. The police report did not have a description of the third man.

A Canton police supervisor said Tuesday night that he did not have any information beyond the report. Police detectives could not be reached for comment.

“I just hope I don’t run into them again,” said Stewart, who had cuts and marks on his head and body. “I’m going to have something for them if they try it again. ... I’ll break their neck.”

"I suppose all those injured by IEDs just needed a concealed handgun as well."

You are a little short in the logic department.

A handgun would have saved the guy in the wheelchair from being beaten by three young punks, but his two legs would not. Why in the world you think that a handgun could keep someone from being injured by an IED?

Sometimes, there is no logic.
Sometimes, shit just happens.

Fact is, he didn't have a gun.

It coulda have gotten him killed.
It shouldn'ta happened.
And I wouldn'ta called him a wimp.

But that's just illogical me.
Merry Christmas.

And Merry Christmas to you and perhaps you now have an idea of what Christmas gift might be most logical for your loved one.

Yes, hanging Chrismas lights with an 8 year old boy and a concealed gun in his pocket is quite logical. LMAO! Stopping four idiots from drag racing in front of his house with nothing but his bare hands might not be logical but... he's a crazy Marine, not necessarily chock full of logic as is his sister. He found the four young men rather quickly and handled the situation. Quite well I might add.

But hey, feel 'free' to call me illogical...feel 'free' to beat down an amputee widowed veteran in a wheelchair who was already mugged once, a wimp.

He needs to get over to DAV and they will help him get to a VA Medical Center

If he has a war wound that was aggravated he should be eligable for a bump in his disability rating and a wheelchair, along with further help for his long term care..

I hope he gets some help with this asap

Amazing that they admitted the criminals were black.

I watched this story unfold from our local Ohio news station. A local business and many others not only got a new wheelchair for this "victim" but locals brought him food and supplies as well. Shame on him for taking advantage of kind people, and God bless those who gave from their hearts. I dont think the point of the story should be on people who give...but on the ones who take advantage of them. Bless those who take the time to do for others in times of need. :)
