NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."
"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history."
Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated _ when black history would become fundamental to American history.
Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."
The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.
"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.
Freeman received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1987's "Street Smart," 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy" and 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption." He finally won earlier this year for "Million Dollar Baby."
Sounds good to me.
Well said, Mr. Freeman. Well said.
Now I know why I like this man!
He gets it.
Can we follow up with
Black Expo
Black Miss America
Black Congressional Caucus
etc.?
Silly, isn't it?
You know of course, that a black man invented the traffic light, and if it weren't for him, we'd be colliding all the time at intersections. And a black man invented the comb, and if it weren't for him, we'd all be wearing dreadlocks.
Anyways, I can't think of anything more important than dividing and apportioning human accomplishments by race. It brings us all together.

"You know, I'm going to start thanking
the woman who cleans the restroom in
the building I work in. I'm going to start
thinking of her as a human being"
And he knows his penguins, too
I find this so funny, because just yesterday or today, Debbie Wasserman-Schulz of Florida, was on the House floor, complaining that there is a Black History Month, and there are Hispanic celebrations in May...but,
there is no "Jewish History Month"...so, I guess Freeman should talk to the Congress, because it seems that they are going the opposite way. LOL
The ghettoization of history into black studies, women's studies, queer studies, etc., has been nothing but destructive.
I she the one who's hair looks like she just straddled an electric fence(post)?
How about teaching children in the US in the Spanish language?
Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors in America. I happen to agree with him here too.
Well said, Mr. Freeman. You're a class act, as always.
I'll second both of your comments.
Even way back then, I liked the guy.
Good for him. I think the lib is waking up after 68 years.
OK,Mr Freeman...for 100 bonus points:
Is white history also American history?
I believe the Black Congressional Caucus will be the LAST one to go.
