Freeman calls black history month ridiculous Oscar-winning actor says black history is American history
The Associated Press Updated: 2:46 p.m. ET Dec. 15, 2005
NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."
"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history."
Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated when black history would become fundamental to American history.
Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."
The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.
"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.
Freeman received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1987's "Street Smart," 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy" and 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption." He finally won earlier this year for "Million Dollar Baby."
"You know they were Kings and Princes and had a highly developed societies before the white man imposed Judeo Christian belief systems...zzzzzzz"

Great actor.
Always wondered why no one seemed to ever complain about Black History Month as being February which is the shortest month.
There is only so much that a government can do to help people with cash and programs. The self-help and cultural reform aspects now need to take hold, and frankly the politicians and bureaucrats who maintain the old phase and derive their worth from it are now obstacles to progress. The exposed underbelly of New Orleans illustrated this state of affairs quite clearly.
And another stone rolls off the crumbling Democrat edifice.
"I speak english and don't scratch my ass in public?".
Wow, I'm articulate and refined, too. Who'da thunk?
He just won Best Supporting Actor at the last Academy Awards.
I never did, but give him credit for calling black history month ridiculous since it is.
Bravo, Mr. Freeman! Now, could you pass this refreshing clarity along to Reverends Jackson and Sharpton?
The antithesis and the antidote to the likes of "Calypso Louis", Al Sharp-tone, Revvvvv. Jacksunnnn...
Put him on the list of Hollywood's betters - right by Bruce Willis, Sly Stallone, Tome Selleck, Charlton Heston, Pat Sajak, James Woods, Denzel Washington, Mel Gibson...
A.A.C.
His best role was playing Joe Clark in "Lean on Me." I wish every school in the country had a principal like Joe Clark. Freeman was also good in "BAtman Begins."
Salute to Morgan Freeman!
It was called "Under Suspicion" and it shows on IFC sometimes.
Wow. This is one of the most brilliant statements on the month that has come out.
Way to go Freeman. I always did like the guy's acting. I am sure he is liberal in other ways, but this is a great statement.
"Hope can be a dangerous thing"
I totally agree with Black History Month.
I'm not sure if 'stop talking about it' is the best solution. But not talking about it the way we are currently talking about it, that I'd agree with.
That figures. My hunch based on the headline was right: He wants 12 months.
;)
Yes, he was.
Morgan Freeman has always been one of my favorite actors...alongside of his better known films, such as Driving Miss Daisy, and The Shawshank Redemption, and Million Dollar Baby, he has made tons and tons of other movies...he was also in Outbreak, Chain Reaction, Kiss the Girls, and many many others...whether he stars in a film as a major character or a minor character, he always gives an outstanding performance, which can often elevate even a mediocre film...
I remember him from the very early days of 'The Electric Company' or 'Zoom' which if I remember right, were childrens programs on PBS during the 1970s...I remember my younger son watching and he always liked that 'Tall, Skinny Guy with the big hair(which is how my son described him)..that tall, skinny guy with the big hair was Morgan Freeman....so hes been around for a very long time, and every performance he gives is a great one...
And now we see he is a fine clear thinking man as well...
