THE Australian racism seen in Sydney recently arises from the same wellspring as British racism, says feminist and academic Germaine Greer.
It came from ignorance and working-class frustration, the social commentator said. Reflecting upon the racial violence that exploded in southern Sydney last weekend, she also criticised British media coverage of the events as "gratuitous and silly".
The British media has given the violence between young whites and Lebanese-Australians considerable attention.
It said the racially fuelled violence in Cronulla and other Sydney suburbs over the past week was the latest incarnation of the bigotry that includes discrimination against Aborigines at the time of white settlement and anti-Chinese sentiment during the gold rushes.
"Australia is as racist as Britain, no more, no less," Ms Greer said in The Guardian newspaper.
"Australian racism derives from the same bottomless source as British racism - from universal ignorance and working-class frustration, reinforced by an unshakeable conviction of British superiority over all other nations on earth, especially the swarthy ones.
"If Australia had been colonised by any other nation but the British, it would be less racist.
"As it is, it's dying hard."
Ms Greer predicted the police would be nearly powerless to stop further eruptions of trouble over the coming months.
"This looks like being a bloody summer in Australia," she said.
Agreed. Germaine Greer is a blot on Australian History.
She's probably desperate these days to get somebody to pay attention to her.
I will agree with her on one thing:
"Australia is as racist as Britain, no more, no less,"
Yeah, relatively not that much in my experience. Theres a hardcore of racists in both countries, and some of them are no doubt stoking the fire in Sydney, but when Joe Normal starts rioting I think theres a deeper reason why.
Incidently, this has been far from all over the British media. Gratuitous coverage my foot.
She is good for a laugh. In her sixties she was espousing the sexual attractiveness of young boys before puberty. She could be a good volunteer to mediate with the Lions of Lebanon.
"If Australia had been colonised by any other nation but the British, it would be less racist.Horse manure. The French have a far sharper (and less historically justified) sense of innate superiority than the British. Also, had Australia been settled by the Japanese or Chinese, it would be far more racist.

Germaine Greer?
Thought she went to Hippy Heaven years ago.
This part is also interesting:
It came from ignorance and working-class frustration
The underground elitism and social snobbery of the socialists is surfacing.
She was an English lecturer at my old University. Not that she ever did any lecturing as she was always on the telly instead.
Correct. Greer exposes pathetic naivete if she thinks only "the British" are racist.
The racial and ethnic distinctions made by Asians from Korea down to Indonesia are profound and completely unashamed.
The Koreans hate the Japanese who disdain the Chinese who demean the Cambodians who dislike the Vietnamese who admire the Thais who dislike the Malays who fight with the Indonesians. All on racial and ethnic grounds.
Some loon stands on her soapbox makes blanket unsubstantiated claims against Australians and for this she is thought of as morally superior?
At one time she called herself an anarchist-communist. Everything that comes out of her mouth smacks of elitism.

The difference between the riots in Australia and those in France seems to be that the Australian riots are a two-way street.
I just find it interesting because they posed as the friends and champions of the working classes for so long. It was generally only a pose, of course.
The Koreans hate the Japanese who disdain the Chinese who demean the Cambodians who dislike the Vietnamese who admire the Thais who dislike the Malays who fight with the Indonesians. All on racial and ethnic grounds. The ethnic Chinese communities in various nations have been called "the Jews of Asia" for precisely this reason. It's perhaps ironic and perhaps not that Asian immigrants to the US (including those from the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East) have settled into cultural patterns much like the Jewish immigrants of the turn of the last century.
India, the other "obvious" potential settler of Australia, would also have formed a more fundamentally racist society. India is perhaps the culture most conscious of relative social status, even moreso than Japan or Mexico.
The British and the nations they settled are probably the societies most open to "outsiders" on Earth. While racial/cultural clashes are inevitable, we are open about them. To some, that equates "racism". Go figure.

Yep, even in my comments above I used the word "racism" with reluctance, because the friction is actually a package of race, culture, religion, ethnicity, history, etc.
Which is also why Germaine Greer (not to mention the media) expose themselves as utter lunkheads (or monumental liars) in blaming the Australian riots on "racism". It's a formula for children.
Maybe she revels in the thought of being gang raped by muslim men. SHe needs to head to the beach in a bikini so the muslim dogs can have their way with her. After all, it's racism if you object to that muslim behavior.
What about middle eastern racism?
