It was written over 150 years ago, so the specifics about American life are a bit outdated.

As for the general philosophical views, it is excellent and still applicable today... especially to your situation. A few quotes from the book can be found here. One way or another, the book is considered a classic in the West.

The following works also get my recommendation:

The Second Treatise of Civil Government by John Locke

The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith

On Liberty by John Stuart Mill

You may notice that none of the authors I recommended are American; two are English and one is Scottish. Nevertheless, their views on the function of government, the proper management of an economy, and the importance of human liberty heavily influence American thinking, and I hope that they will inspire you and your fellow students in your noble endeavor.

I need to go to sleep now (it's 1:00 AM where I am), but I'll leave you with this:

"Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is the highest political end." --Lord Acton

By the way, if you ever travel to the United States, let us know. We'll show you around.

TEHRAN 14 Dec. (IPS) One of Iran’s most influential ruling cleric called Friday on the Muslim states to use nuclear weapon against Israel, assuring them that while such an attack would annihilate Israel, it would cost them "damages only".

Did you read this. He is quite foolish in the part that it would 'cost them damages only' in Iran.

Crackpots should never have nuclear power.

Good Night!

John Locke is my hero too! :-P

Thanks for the offer but I think I will travel to the US as a citizen of free Iran, not the one that supports terrorism and takes Americans hostage!

"... in general where were all the sensible people?"

Some stood up. Not enough to prevent the tide of insanity.

For the ones who knew what they should have done, they've probably been wringing their hands for thirty years.

They didn't have the Movie, "Braveheart" to tell them what they should do, and how they'd regret Not doing it.

"The Mullahs are the laziest and the most evil creatures one may imagine in this world"

Worth repeating.....the mad mullahs are the source of Islamic fundamentalism.

I have a question - some banners in the photos have stuff written in Arabic. Is the Arabic script used for writing in Farsi too? Is there any chance that the Persians will ditch the Arabic script in favor of the Persian ones?

BTW, I have a few Persian friends (Parsees)....great folks. They can be considered to be true Persians in many ways as they still retain their ancient culture in ways that muslim Persians in Iran have not been able to.

BTW, if you haven't read it, I recommend V.S. Naipaul's Among the Believers. Great book.....it starts with Naipul's trip in Iran and his meetings with the mad mullahs. No wonder the fanatical muslims hate him.

We have been trying hard not to use Arabic words within the Persian language but it is so hard!

It is like avoiding french words in English

Thanks for the clarification. I always keep telling people to stop calling Persians "Arabs." The Persians are a glorious civilization and to compare them to the Arabs is VERY unfair.

BTW, who was the king of Persia when the Arabs invaded the country and forcibly converted most Persians to Islam? Was it Darius the Third?

Thanks for your contribution, FRiend. Most Persians I have met, Parsees and otherwise, have been some of the finest people I know.

Islam lacks the spiritual aspects of religion. To me, it is but a socio-political system of control. Sha'ria is its sword.
Zoroastrianism was the religion of Persia, not by fiat, edict or coercion but by embrace of the people. The God of Abraham and Zoroaster are so similar as to be one and the same.
Hold fast to your heritage, reclaim your identity. I believe Iran's salvation must come from within. I pray no harm befalls the people of Persia.
Thank you for being frank.

Darius III was defeated by Alexandre way before Arabs invaded Persia!

The Sassanid King named Yazd-Gerd was in charge when the invasion occured

The last unconverted remanants are living in India; they are known there as "Parsees." They still practice their religion freely and have actually done a great job of maintaining their heritage.

OK....so I was totally mistaken then. Too many kings named Cyrus and Darius in Persian history, I guess :)

I read an account of the meeting between Yazdgerd III and the Arabs many years ago. The king delivered a stinging rebuke when the Arabs demanded that he and his subjects convert to Islam.

Today Iraqis vote and on a tomorrow not too distant Iranians will vote--for a slate uncensored by pedophile opiated fascist mullahs.

Regime Change Iran means secular democracy and the end to Islamist suppression.

Here's to the removal of Ahmadinejad, perhaps by pistol suicide in the fuhrerbunker.
