WASHINGTON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Leaders of the pilots union at bankrupt Delta Air Lines (DALRQ.OB: Quote, Profile, Research) voted on Thursday to seek a strike authorization vote from members, the labor group said.

The timing of a vote had not been determined, according to the Delta unit of the Air Line Pilots Association, which is fighting a company bid to throw out its contract to save money as it restructures in bankruptcy.

Delta's pilots are the highest paid in the country. Senior Captains make $350,000 per year, flying 60 hours a month.

According to this Site they make less than half that.

Ok, I am wrong. I thought the 747 captains made the earlier quoted amount. I do know that salaries have been reduced in recent years. My bad...

I donated mine to the military families..they can use them faster than I could and I don't want to waste them.

The bankruptcy filing indicates the average pilot's salary at Delta to be $169,393. They did take a 32.5% pay cut last year. That would put the average salary pre-cut at $225,857. A few of them made over $300K.

I'd like to see a seniority distribution for Delta. I suspect that they shaved the top off the "years at Delta" category by offering early retirement in 2004 and earlier this year. A senior pilot who didn't take early out and access their lump sum distribution (instead of the pension) was rather stupid.

I would think you have generational extremes - less than 5 year tenured pilots are not vested in the pension - so they might be willing to go for broke. Some intermediate tenure pilots might be willing to strike, those with say 20 years don't want to blow the whole thing away.

Would this be something like the crew of the Titanic voting to strike....after hitting the berg?

Bingo. People strike to get something. The airline has nothing they can give.
