Pittsburgh Brewing, forced into bankruptcy yesterday to avoid a cutoff of its water supply, plans to get rid of more than $6 million in pension obligations and emerge from bankruptcy with its ownership group intact, Vice Chairman Joseph Piccirilli said.
From left, Pittsburgh Brewing Co.'s Valerie Stoltz, director of human resources; Tony Ferraro, vice president of sales and marketing; Jeff Vavro from media relations; and Joseph Piccirilli, vice chairman, talk after a news conference at the brewery in Lawrenceville yesterday afternoon

"Seems like Falstaff, Falls City, and Ballantine all disapeared about the same time."
Ohmigod! Quarts of warm Falstaff. I shudder at the memory.
Obvously, you've never tasted it. It may be many things, but tasing like water is not one of them.

Hey! Don't diss Narragansett - It was great when they still made it with Scituate water. It was only after they closed the brewery and outsourced production that it sucked...
Yeah, Singh Hai (Thailand) was like that; Guamanian San Miguel, on the other hand, was consistently just blah -- it was brewed on Guam from malt extract rather than malt.
Amen. I've called it Iron Sh!tty for decades. PBR is another that makes Pudweiser taste good in comparison. Not that I'm of fan of Pudweiser either.
Before Falstaff it was Lemp.
Oh good Lord.
When the heck was THAT? Must've tasted AWFUL.
IMAGE HOSTED BY TRIPOD Beer? Yeah, that would suck.
haven't drunk the stuff in years, but I feel sorry for the company. Hope it turns around.
how about Red White and Blue ... the only beer I've met that can close down a party
I hope they are able to survive. Every major city in the Midwest and most all over the country used to have several breweries. Some made pretty darn good beer and some made real swill. Most have been lost over the past 50 years or so. Like the song says," another piece or Americana lost". Growing up in southwest Ohio, I remember Weidemanns, Heidelberg, Burger and Shenling (sp?). My late mother in law damn near had a stroke when Weidemann finally closed and she could no longer get it. My poor brother in law would pick up 5 or 4 cases for her every couple of weeks and the last time he got any for her he could only get one (1) case. The old woman went ballistic. Called the brewery and raised hell. They found her 8 or 10 cases and sold them to her at a discount. When they were gone, I don't think she ever drank another beer the rest of her life.
Old Style: Keeping the derelicts under Wacker Drive happy since 1917. ;-)
Now THAT'S the stuff!
Too bad it isn't easier to get out in Kali.
I had a few IC's before, and yeah, it wasn't the worst beer I ever had (top hat still holds that title), but I only tried IC light once. Actually IC light, was what I thought tasted like tap water.
Yes, the pride of Latrobe. Brings back the days of gulping down Carlo Rossi or Boone's followed with one or six Rolling Rock chasers.
Mid '70s, as best as I can remember.
Must've tasted AWFUL.
Honestly, it's the only beer I've ever had (warm OR cold)
where I couldn't finish drinking just one lousy can.
It was really putrid. LOL!
I used to get icepick-through-the-forehead hangovers from drionking that crap in college.
You'd think I'd've learned after 10, 20, 50 times.
Between the tremendous force, which needed to be applied at the proper angle to release the top, and the sharp shards, it was an accomplishment to open a bottle without either splashing a good bit of the contents out or cutting yourself or both. To really do it, you needed a sturdy surface (like a solid dorm desk) and neeed to hold the bottle down firmly with one hand while you pulled at the ring with the other.
Good times.
