Lake County officials are again offering to swap cash for unwanted firearms after a one-year hiatus in the popular program.
A coalition of business and law enforcement groups will sponsor the fourth gun buyback program, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 10.
First run in 2001, the three previous events have collected more than 1,000 guns in exchange for $50 gift certificates good at food and department stores in the county.
At a press conference Wednesday, Sheriff Gary Del Re said the goal of the exchange is to allow people to safely rid themselves of unwanted weapons.
In no way is our intention to disarm law-abiding citizens, Del Re said. Our goal is to get unwanted firearms, ammunition and accessories out of houses and greatly decrease the incidence of tragedy.
In the programs first year, residents brought in 408 guns, Del Re said. The total jumped to 478 in 2002, then fell to 205 the following year.
Organizers took last year off, Del Re said, and hope there will be a renewed interest in the exchange.
Police stations in Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Gurnee, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Mundelein, Round Lake Beach, Vernon Hills and Waukegan will be drop-off points for the weapons.
Those wishing to turn in a weapon are advised to unload it, put it in the trunk of their car and drive to the station nearest their home.
At the station, residents are asked to leave the gun in the trunk, go into the station and an officer will be sent to retrieve the weapon from your vehicle.
Those unable to unload a weapon or transport it are urged to call the police station nearest their home and an officer will be sent to your home to pick up the weapon.
Firearm Owners Identification card requirements for those turning in weapons will be waived for those who do not have cards, but those who do are encouraged to bring them when taking a weapon to the stations.
If I had the cash I'd pay $51 for each one.
hey folks!
is that gun of yours broken? too rusty to shoot anymore?
is it (heh heh) too hot to handle?
then sell it to us!
that's right! good old trader bob will give you 50 bucks for your old, busted, hot gun!
C'mon down!
We can hope the criminals'll turn theirs in...
I bet they are....bring in a gun that has no paperwork on it..show them your CCW and lose it because you have an unregistered gun.
FANTASTIC !!!
I`ll bring in my rusted and seized .22 which is worth NOTHING and get 50 bucks for it !
Sucker born every minute :-)
Maybe if they offer me double the value for each one, I would sell them some of my extras, but $50.. that is just a joke.. I have a friend who is a gunsmith who could sell them a bunch of worthless trash guns...
They had those buy backs in Cook County, IL and I know at least three people that are gun collectors and had a lot of old non-working, rusty guns in boxes that they turned in at 50 bucks a piece. 20 guns = $1,000. They made a least that much for getting ridding of junk! Ain't America great!
get unwanted firearms, ammunition and accessories out of houses and greatly decrease the incidence of tragedy
There is no solid evidence that a gun in the home is dangerous.
The Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification card is not a CCW, it is a requirement for the simple ownership of a firearm in Illinois. Illinois residents cannot legally TOUCH a firearm without an FOID.
There is absolutely NO CCW in Illinois, and handguns are completely banned in much of the Chicago area.
Wow, they angled for a free car search.
There. I was trying to think if I had ever seen a gun that was only worth $50.
Not to mention the villages and county get the sales tax when you go to cash-in the $50 certificates.
Just what I was thinking.
Dilbert exposed that gambit in a strip where the QA and Developer engineers high fived each other saying "We're rich!"
I hope some smart gun collectors are around to pay an extra few bucks for the good guns before the cops get their hands on them. The horror stories of some old lady turning in the Luger or Colt SAA her Daddy had always make me cringe. OTOH, I'm sure the cops always grab all the decent guns before they hit the smelter.
LOL No wonder all the libs would be drooling over such a program. On the other hand, I kind of like that they set up a program to which we can sell our crappy non-working firearms to, at a profit!
