Ok this is a FRIDAY VANITY post.... What were some of your favorite Military oriented tv shows?
Go back as far as you like.
Mine are: Steve Canyon, 12 O'clock High, Rat Patrol & Combat.
Comedys are ok too.... MASH, Phil Silvers, McHale's Navy...
 Maybe THAT's why he's not turning up in my google searches...
Victory at Sea (Great music)
And, of course, Victory At Sea is in a class all by its own.
Amen to that one. I ought to have the episodes memorized by now, but I still watch every dang chance I get.
No, Kim Delaney was Tour of Duty. Dana Delaney was China Beach.
Not the all-time best, but worth mentioning: "Wackiest Ship in the Army" based on the movie with the same name. Seems like it was only on for a year and in the late '60's.
Good show. I just watched the DVDs recently and it is grittier than China Beach, a decent show in its own right. The only problem is that due to the cost of music licensing, the theme and all of the rest of the period music has been replaced with a sort of generic '60's soundtrack.
You're right. MASH glorified the idea of 35 year old men acting like 17 year old boys in eternal rebellion against parents.
It's hard to come up with a less attractive image. Military men as whiny liberal emotionally immature 17 year old (on the inside), passively aggressively taking on "daddy" (the establishment) has got to be a bottom.
MASH worked at the time because the "in group" was young, and hated the military. That's not the case now. Boomers are older and they don't hate the military. And young men? They don't hate the military either. (Note to Hollywood writers: find your inner adult -- look at a calendar - it's 2005, not 1970)
I agree that Band of Brothers is the best mini-series ever. But I thought this was about weekly TV series.
A.A.,
Spent a couple days at China Beach. Never saw anything like her. In fact, I don't remember being able to see anything at all.
That's what first got me interested in the Marines..
Oops. The names are too close.
Remember "the Silent Service?"
We really liked Tour of Duty but my all time favorite are the old Baa Baa Black Sheep. When I was young I really had a thing for Robert Conrad until I found out I was as tall as him when I was 8.
Band of Brothers and Ba ba Blacksheep
Point taken. I just wish it never happened! Childhood Heroes are not easy to come by.
Band of Brothers and Ba ba Blacksheep
Hogan's Heroes.
