US carries out 1,000th execution
BBC ^ | 12/02/2005

The US has carried out the 1,000th execution since capital punishment was reintroduced in 1976. Kenneth Boyd, a convicted killer, was put to death by lethal injection in North Carolina for the murder of his estranged wife and her father in 1988.

He was given three drugs - one to put him to sleep, another to paralyse him, and a third to stop his heart.

Boyd, 57, has said the death penalty is "nothing but revenge". Relatives of his victims say he deserves to die.

Boyd was pronounced dead at 0215 (0715 GMT), state Department of Correction spokeswoman Pam Walker said.

Any hope of a reprieve ended when the Supreme Court rejected Boyd's final appeal and the North Carolina Governor, Mike Easley, said he could find "no compelling reason to grant clemency".

Wish it was Tookie!

Sorry my state of Colorado has been so disappointing in putting these social diseases to death.

US carries out 1,000th execution

That "1,000th" of course is an arbitrary, misleading, media-created number, since it refers only to the number "since capital punishment was reintroduced in 1976." Before the temporary ten-year ban was wrongly imposed by the SCOTUS, there were many thousands of executions carried out.

Also, the number is way below what it ought to be, if justice were to be done and all murderers were swiftly and rightly executed.

I've long held the belief that the death penalty provides little deterence to murderers, but looking at this I am currently reexamining this belief.

Any deterence value is a side benefit and should not be consider as the reason to support the death penalty. What value do we place on the life of an innocent victim? Anything short of executing the killer, lessens the value of all of us.

On a more practical level, there have been a number of cases where someone has been on death row, and somehow gotten out, and killed others. The one sure things about the death penalty is, that person will never kill another innocent victim.

Love this mania for counting stuff; let's see what's that abortion number up to now? Must be around here somewhere, I know these MSMs are so diligent about keeping track of carnage, Hmm, must be over there in that huge stack of Innocent Deaths No Libs Give A Damn About.

Too few. Now if 40,000 murderers had been executed by now, there would be plenty of reason to celebrate.
