For about 20 minutes Tuesday, the MacKenzie family met privately with President Bush as he offered sympathy and listened to stories about Pfc. Tyler MacKenzie, a 20-year-old solider killed in Iraq earlier this month by a roadside bomb.
"We cried, and I had to pull out some Kleenex and give it to everyone else," Tyler's grandmother Mary MacKenzie said.
"I had to give some to the president, too, because he didn't have any."
Both David and Julie MacKenzie, along with grandparents Emmett and Mary MacKenzie, saw Bush speak at the Brown Palace Hotel before the Secret Service moved them to a quiet room to meet with the president.
Emmett MacKenzie, a 75-year-old Korean War veteran, said Bush reassured them that there would be no pullout of troops until Iraqis could provide their own security.
"He said we wouldn't quit, and we told him we didn't want to quit until the job was done," Emmett MacKenzie said.
"We want to continue, and we're behind him 100 percent."
Nothing, but the Iraq war needed to be prosecuted more vigorously at certain points, still probably does. Bush also needs to speak about it more, and more vigorously. He's sometimes done a good job, but more is necessary. I hope we're about to see it.
I would insist, however, that the roles of a national leader and Jesus are completely different ones. What's sauce for the goose isn't sauce for the gander, if I may offer an undignified metaphor here.
I cried when I read the story.
I guess you will need to explain why it is not good... what is it about tears that makes you think it is not a good political image...
I was thinking the same thing. Next thing you know, Dubya will show up on Oprah and they'll have a big ol' tear fest.

Dubya ought to be shedding tears every time he hears or reads or is told a sad story. And the more he cries in public, the better.
And the Secret Service guys should quit carrying guns and start carrying Kleenex dispensers.

Nothing wrong with him crying. I shed a tear for each lost soldier I have trained and their families.
